An Analysis of Next Door
Next Door is published in Cosmopolitan, adapted in 1975 for a short film titled Next Door, and in 1991, adapted in the first episode of the television series Kurt Vonnegut's Monkey House. It tells about an adventure of Paul when his parents went out to see a movie. Right right after the boy’电网调度管理条例s天堂的 parents left he found his very close neighbor the Hargers quarreling and fighting, then he resorted to the radio DJ All Night Sam. While for some reasons his clever ideas were proved not only wrong but make things even more complicated. While about the author, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.( November 11, 1922– April 11, 2007), he was an German American writer. His works, such as Cat's Cradle(1963), Slaughterhouse-Five(1969), and Breakfast of Champions(1973), blend satire, gallows humor, and science fiction. As a citizen he was a lifelong supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a pacifist intellectual, who often was critical. He was known for his humanist beliefs and was honorary president of the American Humanist Association. The New York Times headline at the time of his death called him "the counterculture's novelist."
If we do not pay much attention to the details, and just regard it as a chaotic, disordered, illogical story. We may tell ourselves that it is just a simple story which depicts us a brave, well-behaved and caring boy. And we will not bother to figure out who is that big, blonde, all soft and awry woman? Is or is not Mr. Herger telling the truth? Is this story really happening or it’s just someone’s imagining? Is this story just a bedtime story of children or is there something behind it? Why things like Paul’s microscope, the movie his parents saw, All Night Sam appears so many times in this story, is the author doing this on purpose? But I don’t believe it is so simple, because he锚’s Kurt Vonnegut拟水狼蛛.
In his book Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction, Vonnegut listed eight rules for writing a short story. One of them is “Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To hell with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages”, and this may be one of the answers. We also know people had doubts about his identity at that time which meant his life would be beyond hard and bitter, so did his beliefs. This can also explain something.班昭续汉书
Thus in my point of view, the author has done his best to give us “as much information as possible as soon as possible”, but at the same time, he did want us to finish our Next Door by ourselves. Maybe he just told the children a simple inspiring story, maybe he just described his dream, maybe he’s telling us about his political and religious doubts or whatever he’s helping us to compose. All in all, it is our decision to make that what is true and what is not, what is on purpose and what is just written as decoration. Anyway, the author is giving the readers an opportunity to think and write is the only truth I am sure.
