        一、Introduction
Homosexuality as a social phenomenon becomes more and more popular. Even though the homosexual is not an open talk, the social attitude became much more tolerant to it. The lesbian is the minority of the society and they bare great pressure from society and family.
The most of lesbians are affected by the environments that include the unhappy family li
fe and unfortunate personal experience. Especially, the hurt by the opposite sex relationship often causes the lesbian.
This paper made an interview of a lesbian named Yuer. She is 22 years old and has lesbian experience for five years. She was hurt once by the opposite sex. In the interview, she tells us what she encountered and must face to in the society.
Li Yinhe (sociologist) ever said the lesbian as a subculture had been existed for thousands of years. The lesbian are easy to be irritated and feel hopeless, thus the society should pay more attention to them.
The homosexuality had been existed for thousands of years following the human existing. In the ancient china, the homosexual is the expertise of up-class. And on that time, this kind of thing began to be regarded as a scandal.
        二、Research questions
1.How is the society reacting to lesbian as a social phenomenon?
2.What is the current situation for lesbian in China?
3.What is the challenging facing lesbian in China?
        三、Methodology
Both qualitative and quantitative research will be involved. Only one of the approaches can’t meet the need according to the referred research questions. There will be questionnaires, interviews and free chat. The data from the questionnaires is much more objective. There will be three types of questionnaires: for non-lesbian group before 1980’s, for non-lesbian group after 1980’s and for lesbian group. The results of the three questionnaires will give the present situation of lesbians in china. The face to face interview is the main method of this paper.
        四、Key findings
Although China is a traditional country, researches show that the tolerance of lesbianism in China is higher than any other country in the world. However, in our researc
h, we found that even though Chinese society as a whole is more tolerant than before, lesbians in China still suffer from discriminations. Many lesbians in China are still under great pressure.
Yuer (pseudonym) is a university student she has a great family and her parents love her and care about her so much. She became a lesbian because of the deep scar caused by her former heterosexual relationship in high school. She does not think she needs help with her sexual orientation because she feels comfortable now with her lesbian mate. But still, she admitted in the interview that she suffered the great pressure from the family and some discrimination from the society.
According to the data that was collected in the questionnaire, more and more people in China are tolerant to lesbianism. The research shows that attitude mainly differs among people in two generations. People born before 1980s are more reject to and discriminate against lesbianism compared with those born after 1980s. Those two generations live in different society and share different educational background. The elder generation believes
more in traditional Chinese culture so that they hold a traditional attitude to Chinese female. Wu (2004) points out that Chinese people tend to believe that female’s duty is to carry on the family line and follow the traditional “three obedience and four virtues”. Thus, it is hard for the elder generation to accept lesbianism as a normal social phenomenon.
With the trend of globalization, media plays an important role in discovering different marginal group. Lesbian, as a marginal group in China, is coming out from the dark. There are more and more “LALA” clubs founded in big cities and first lesbian free hotline was opened in 2010.
According to the questionnaire, there is 56% pressure coming from family.Yuer mentioned that she could hardly imagine what would happen if she told her parents about her lesbian identity. In China, homosexual marriage is not protected by law. No one in China can admit that same-sex marriage is a real marriage. Thus, only female and male can become a family which is the traditional and the only family form in China. During the chat with other lesbians, some come out to parents in order to get support and understan
ding. However, they hardly achieve the goal; instead, many parents bring them to psychologist for help and treat them as problem daughters.
