INTERNSHIP REPORT

This report is about my internship of interpretation in BJSTU covering the period of four months from September to January. Through these months, I learned a good deal of things about interpretation.

It’s true that solid theoretical knowledge plays a vital role in interpretation. However, the s

ignificance of practical training should not be neglected. So our school gave us a chance to practice what we have learned in this term. Our class was divided into three groups and each group did the English interpretation training together. Fortunately, my group was constituted with four lovely and smart girls having strong senses of responsibility, punctuality, and teamwork.

To begin with, I was aware of the importance of accumulation of knowledge. Our first interpretation was the Report of the Revolution of 1911, which was formal and supposed to be interpreted seriously. After reading the English version of the Hu Jintao's report at 17th Party Congress, Constitution of the Communist Party of China, and China’s 12th Five-Year Plan, I found they are similar to some extent. All of them have the similar sentence—“以马克思列宁主义、思想、理论和“三个代表”重要思想为指导，深入贯彻落实科学发展观，继续解放思想，坚持改革开放，推动科学发展，促进社会和谐”, which also was delivered in this Report. Thus, we might be read lots of such passages both in Chinese and English to accumulate our glossary.

Secondly, I realized the significance of preparation work. The Report of the Revolution of 1911 was the most difficult to interpret to me in that there were many Chinese words I was unable to understand it, not mentioned interpretation, such as “亟拯斯民于水火，切扶大厦之将倾”, “实行联俄、联共、扶助农工三大政策同声传译”, and so on. But interpreting is the process of understanding and making understood. Interpreters first of all listen to the source text and then analyze the discourse and understand the message. And then, an interpreter should reconstruct the message in the target language and convey it to the audience making the listeners understand the speaker’s message. So we should read a great deal of related materials both in Chinese and English to correctly understand the speaker and correctly interpret it to the listener.

比高犬 What’s more, I also learned my lack of a solid foundation for English. An easy word “旅途” defeated me, which the original sentence is “你更愿意将工作视为一次激动人心的旅途” for I found I actually did not know the difference among trip, journey, travel, and tour. After looking up the dictionary, I got that trip means going from one place to another that can be used for short and unimportant matters, but it sometimes used where the process

of going is more important than the destination. Journey means going from one place to another that is usually not used for short and unimportant matters. Tour means going to several places of interest, to look at them. And travel is a very general term for the process of going from A to B. Trip is obviously the best one trip for the process in the Innovation Works is more important than the result. So in the process of interpretation, we sometimes need to choose an appropriate word to reach the original meaning as much as we can, which need a proficient and solid English skill.

In general, through this interpretation practice, I learned a lot of new words and phrases, realized both my strong and week points, as well as strengthened my awareness of responsibility, punctuality, and teamwork. Although our interpretation is so poor now, I believe that practice makes perfect. I will do more interpreting exercise and grasp every chance to do field interpreting.
