一个人的生命究竟有多大的意义(the meaning of one’s life),这有什么标准(standard/criterion)可以衡量(evaluate)吗?提出一个绝对的标准当然很困难;但是,大体上看一个人对待生命的态度是否严肃认真,看他对待工作、生活的态度如何,也就不难对这个人的存在意义做出适当的估计了。
微生物学杂志古来(From ancient time till now)一切有成就的人(all those/all the people with great accomplishment),都很严肃的对待自己的生命,当他活着一天,总要尽量多工作、多学习(study and work to the best of their abilities),不肯虚度年华(idle away),不让时间白白地浪费掉(or just simply waste their life)。我国历代的劳动人民以及大政治家(statesmen)、大思想家(master minds/thinkers)等等都莫不如此(Such examples have been set a lot)。
Could there be any standards to evaluate the meaning of one’s life? Actually, it is quite difficult to bring about such absolute standards. However, it would not be that difficult to make an appropriate evaluation of the meaning of one’s life. If we can, on the whole, perceive his attitude towards his life and work.
From ancient time till now, all those with great
accomplishment, regard their life seriously. As long as they live in this world, they will study and work to the best of their abilities. They will not idle away or just simply waste their life. Such examples have be孝陵卫

中国民族(the Chinese/Chinese people)自古以来(since ancient time)从不把人看作高于一切(regarded human being as the creature of the highest class among everything in the world),在哲学文艺方面(philosophy and arts)的表现都反映出人在自然界中与万物占着一个比例较为恰当的地位(to take up an appropriate position),而非绝对统治万物的主宰(a ruler dominating the world)。因此我们的苦闷(our distress and tediousness),基本上比西方人为少为小:因此苦闷的强弱原是随欲望与野心(one’s desire and ambition)的大小而转移的。农业社会的人比工业社会的人享受差得多,因此欲望(appetite/desire)也小得多,况中国古代素来以不滞于物役,不为物役(“not restricted by material, and not driven by material”)为最主要的人生哲学(life philosophy),并非我们没有守财奴,但比起莫利哀(Moliere/cf. Paul·Mauriat.)与巴尔扎克(Balzac)笔下的守财奴(miser)与野心家(those with
wild/evil ambition)来,就小巫见大巫了。中国民族多数是性情中正和平(righteous and peace-loving)、淡泊(self-contented)、朴实(simple and honesty)、比西方人容易满足。
Since ancient times Chinese people has never regarded human being as the creature of the highest
class among everything in the world and it takes up an appropriate position among all things in the natural world(:)in both aspects of philosophy and arts, but definitely not presenting as a ruler dominating the world. Therefore, Their (our) distress and tediousness is less than those of westerners on the whole, because of the intensity which is growing with (the expansion of ) one’s desire and ambition. People in the agriculture society enjoy less than those in the industry society, thus their appetite is far less either. What’s more, ancient Chinese always treated the principle of “not restricted by material and not driven by material” as their main life philosophy.
There are some misers and people with evil ambition in the Chinese society, but much less than in the W estern world as once described by Moliere and Balzac. Most Chinese are righteous and peace-loving,simple and honest, enjoying a simple life,and much more self contented than westerners.
