Passage 1:
My husband bought me a new washing machine and I used it the very day and washed a lot of things.
Everything worked well, but I found one of my husband’s socks missing. I looked for it everywhere, but couldn’t find it.
The next morning I got ready for school as usual.
The bell rang and the class began. When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class started laughing suddenly. They laughed so much that I was afraid that the headmaster would be in to see all this.
I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and went on writing. When I did this, they laughed even more. Finally the teacher in the room next to mine came in to see what was happening. When he came in, he couldn’t help laughing, too.
“Good heavens,” I said. “Will someone please tell me what is the matter?”
“Oh, God,” said the teacher, “a brown sock stuck to the back of your skirt!”
It was my husband’s missing sock!
“Well,” I said to the class, “let’s just say you have had an unforgettable lesson on static electricity.”

Passage 2:
Advertising is an important part of the free enterprise system. This is because different businesses are competing for the same market. They all want many customers to buy their product. For this reason, they buy advertising space in newspapers or magazines and advertising time on radio or TV. They each hope that advertisements will cause more demand for their product.
There are four types of ads (advertisements): product ads, corporate ads, political ads, and public-service ads. Product ads are for any goods —from clothing to hamburgers. Corporate ads give consumers a positive idea of a company, not just a product. The writers of political ads want people to vote for someone for a political position. Some publi
c —service ads give information about places to find help for various problems; others warn people to be careful about something dangerous.
Advertisements need to decide on a target; in other words, who are possible buyers for their product? For example, what is the age and sex of their target group? Where do these people live? How much education do they have? What are their political beliefs and values? How much money do they make? What are their interests and needs? Sellers of surfboards, for instance, probably target young men in warm-weather climates near the ocean. Some companie s (such as McDonald’s) target various groups, so they have many different ads —one for teenagers, one families, and several in different languages.
Advertisements also need to think about people’s motivation —their reasons for buying something. What makes people buy one product but not another? There are many possible reasons: health, profit, love, entertainment, the need to be part of a group, etc. A study of advertising can also be a study of psychology. When we think about the products that people buy, we learn about their needs, wants, fears, and values.
