METHOD STATEMENT

DESCRIPTION OF ACRAPRIME SP
Acraprime SP is a single component rust inhibiting solvent based polyurethane priming system.  It is used as a steel primer for the Bimagrip range of surfacing systems, and also as a primer for other polyurethane based coatings manufactured by R.S. Clare.
PREPARATION AND PRIMING OF STEEL SURFACES
To ensure the success of the Bimagrip Anti-Skid Surface System it is extremely important that procedures for the correct surface preparation and the application of Acraprime SP are closely followed.
STEP ONE – Surface Preparation
a) Blasting and Disc Abrading
To ensure the highest level of adhesion of the
Acraprime SP to the steel surface all shop or holding
primers must be completely removed.
The steel surface should be prepared by grit blasting to
Swedish Standard SA2½.  Small or inaccessible areas
may be prepared by disc abrading to ST3, followed by a
wiping down with a light hydrocarbon solvent, eg Xylene.
New Build Applications
It is generally not possible for the ramps on new build PCTC’s and RoRo’s to be grit blasted to facilitate the removal of the shop/holding primer.  As a consequence the following procedure was developed and has proved very successful since 1st introduced in the mid 1990’s.
鄄城盐矿1. The area to be coated should first be
swept/blown/vacuumed clean of all debris.
树状模式
2. The area should then be disc abraded to ST2-
3.
3. Any areas where the shop primer has broken
down and oxidation has occurred will require
additional surface preparation to reveal bright,
clean steel.
4. The area should be swept/blown/vacuumed
clean of all debris
5. The area should then be washed down with a
hydrocarbon solvent such as xylene, MEK,
acetone etc b) Prevention of Oxidation
Acraprime SP should be applied within four hours
of surface preparation taking place to prevent localised oxidation occurring.  Oxidation of the steel surface will seriously affect the bond between the Acraprime SP and the surface and lead to failure.  During or after surface preparation should sudden rain or damp weather conditions occur, and before Acraprime SP
has been applied, oxidation is likely to occur.  Under these circumstances surface preparation must be re-
started in accordance with this method statement.
c) Temperatures and RH During Application
湘乡市育才中学Normal application requires relative humidity between 35-85%.  To avoid risks of condensation, application of Acraprime SP should be only done when the temperature of the steel surface is at least 30C higher than the dew point.  Application at temperatures below 10C must be watched carefully since the possibility of ice in the pores of the surface could result in poor adhesion, reduced corrosion protection and a general failure of the Bimagrip system.
STEP TWO – Application of Acraprime SP
a)  Work Area and Tools
The area and tools used to prepare and apply the
Acraprime SP must be protected from pollution or contamination from dust, water, oils, greases, naked flames or excessive heat.
If working outside it is advisable to protect the working area if rain is likely to occur.  Personal protective equipment must be worn in accordance with the Health & Safety Information provided by R.S. Clare.
木栈道b)  Protection of non-work areas
Any grids and manhole covers, and the perimeter of the area not being treated should be protected by masking tape.
c)  Preparation of Acraprime SP本焕大师
The tins of Acraprime SP must be thoroughly shaken prior to use to ensure that the contents are evenly mixed and homogenous.
d) Methods of Application
Acraprime SP can be applied by brush, roller or spray applied utilising conventional airless spray equipment.

When utilising spray equipment the pressure should be 2000 – 2500 psi with a tip size of 0.015“.
e) Application Rate
Acraprime SP is applied at an average rate of 10-12m² per litre.  This is the equivalent of a dry film thickness of
40 – 50 microns.
f) Finished Appearance
A smooth even coating must be achieved.  Do not apply
excessively thick and avoid any puddling.
中国邮路问题g) Tack Free Finish
The Acraprime SP primer must be allowed to cure to a tack – free finish.  This should take approximately one hour at 20°C.
h) Intercoat Adhesion
In order to optimise inter-coat adhesion between the Bimagrip resin and the Acraprime SP, the Bimagrip must be applied within 12 hours of the Acraprime SP curing to the tack-free state.  If this time is exceeded there will be a reduced bond strength between the Bimagrip and the Acraprime SP.  The Acraprime SP will have to be reapplied. To do this, the original primed surface must be lightly abraded, then solvent wiped and
a second application of Acraprime SP applied.Cleaners
A standard hydrocarbon solvent eg Xylene.
Disposal of Containers
See the Health & Safety information in this pack. IMPORTANT NOTE
Under no circumstances should Acraprime SP primer or subsequent surfacing applications be carried out if the surface is not perfectly dry, dust free or if rain is threatened.
