Nowadays, the international business contacts become more frequent and enter a new developing stage with the international trend. As one of the common language in the worl
d, English plays an important role in business communication. It is also the key for speakers to achieve the success with the appropriate use of language. A fair number of words make someone embarrassed/unhappy/dislike or fear when used in communication. In order to avoid the embarrassment or ease the sting of harsh words, people have to used euphemism. Euphemism is a polite word or expression that you use instead of a more direct one to avoid shocking or upsetting someone. The euphemism usually follows the Politeness Principle.
This thesis explores the definition and classification of euphemism and the application of business English euphemism under politeness principle and through comparison of English business correspondences, this paper argues that the principle of politeness in English business letters and international business negotiation should be upheld. Also presented in this paper are several aspects of politeness in International business in order to attain the communicative goal smoothly. This thesis is composed of four parts with chapter four as its core: The first chapter focuses on the history and definition of Politeness Principle. The second part discusses the origin and definition of euphemism fr
om perspective of Politeness Principle and “face want” theory. The third chapter talks about situation of international business. Using the reciprocity principle of “face-saving” theory to contribute a lot to successful message exchange and by the study of euphemism to help people improve the level of their communication and inducing the misunderstanding from different culture in international business.

摘 要
在当今社会，国际间的商务往来更加频繁，商务交际进入了一个全新的发展阶段。英语作为世界上通用的语言之一，在商务交际中起着重要的作用。在国际商务交谈中，说话者正确使用语言是能否顺利实现预期目标的关键。在交际过程中，有些词语使人尴尬、惹人不快、招人讨厌或令人害怕，因此为了避免难堪或减轻对人的伤害，就必须使用委婉语。委婉语是用礼貌的字和词代替直接的话语，来避免打扰和伤害他人，因此委婉语通常都遵循礼貌原则。 本文是通过探讨委婉语和礼貌原则的定义和礼貌原则下商务英语中委婉语的应用和通过实例的比较，论述外贸信函和商务谈判应坚持的礼貌原则，归纳出委婉语在国际商务谈判和国际商务信函当中的礼貌表现。本文分为四个部分，第一章主要探讨委婉语以及礼貌原则的定义和相关研究，第二章从礼貌原则角度下分析委婉语以及面子问题。第三章分析了国际商务现状及当中出现的问题。第四章是本文的核心，侧重委婉语在国际商务中的应用。本文从委婉语定义出发，利用面子问题中的互惠原则，为双方礼貌地保留面子，促使双方关系更加融洽达成谈判的目标,并且借助对委婉语和礼貌原则的理论研究，帮助相关人士提高自己的交际水平，在商业活动中有利减少因文化差异造成的不必要的误解。
