NIKE TEST # G 37 – UV COLORFASTNESS
1.O VERVIEW
The purpose of this test is to determine if white or colored samples of a material will yellow or    fade after exposing the sample to ultraviolet radiation using the QUV accelerated weathering    tester. This test will cover all textiles, synthetic leathers, leathers, threads, laces, webbing/gore    tapes,  painted components (decorative ink printing or sublimation printing), transparent, clear    and translucent rubber, and foams (excluding  EVA, Phylon, rubber), and plastics (excluding      counters).

Initial version – 07/14/1995  - Deb Zaveson (?)
Revision 1 – 7/29/05 - Kelsey Wang / Amy Lyttle

4.S PECIMEN P REPARATION
A.Textiles, synthetic leathers, leathers, foam slab sheets
Die cut four 12 cm x 7.5 cm samples of each material to be tested.    Label three垃圾处理厂工艺流程
specimens as “test” specimens and one as “control” specimen.
B. Injected parts and painted components (example: TPU shank plate, nylon D-
<),
Hand cut four appropriate samples or whole parts that can be fit on the specimen tray of the      QUV machine.  Label three specimens as “test” specimens and one as “control” specimen.
C. Laces, webbing and gore tapes
Hand cut four sections of 12 cm long. Label three specimens as “test” specimens and one as      “control” specimen.
D. Threads
Hand cut four sections of 1- meter long specimens. Roll each into a 12 cm long bundle. Label      three specimens as “test” specimens and one as “control” specimen.
5.S ET-UP &A DJUSTMENT OF  T EST E QUIPMENT
Test equipment type:  QUV tester (Refer to Figure 1, 2 & 3).
Figure 1: Old Basic Model        Figure 2: New Basic Model        Figure 3: SE Model
UV lamp : UVA-340    Room temperature : 22 +/- 2 degrees C
5.1  Testing program set up for old basic model machine:
5.1.1 Push all tabs on the “cycle timer” dial to the outside to set the machine on continuous UV cycle.
5.1.2 Set the power to “ off” on the “ Ultraviolet cycle” panel. Set the thermostat knob to “1”
5.1.3 Discard 2 oldest lamps in each bank every 400 hours of lamp operation and rotate the other
lamps. Each bank will have lamps near the following ages: 0 hours, 400 hours, 800 hours and 1200 hours.  See below for lamp replacement instruction (figure 4 & 5).  Reset the lamp service time to zero.
5.2  Testing program set up for new basic model machine :
5.2.1. Press “program” button to program 1 set test duration section. Set duration set on 24 hours and
elapsed on zero. Set action at end of test on stop + alarm  (There are five options for action if needed.)
5.2.2. Press “program” button to program 2 select step or modify cycle section. Select step 1 for UV
function. Set temperature on 45°c and test time on 24 hours.
5.2.3 Discard 2 oldest lamps in each bank every 400 hours of lamps operation and rotate the other
lamps. Each bank will have lamps near the following ages: 0 hours, 400 hours, 800 hours and 1200 hours.  See below for lamp replacement instruction (figure 4 & 5).  Reset the lamp service time to zero.
5.2.4 Check lamp Operation indicators to be sure all lamps are functioning correctly.
5.3      Testing program set up for SE model machine:
5.3.1. Follow the instruction of menu.
5.3.2. Every 400 hours, calibrate QUV controller setting to be 0.78 W/m2 by using CR-10 radiometer.
The Solar Eye controller has a built-in clock and, after 400 hours of lamp operation, the “
Calibrate” light on the controller will light up. When this occurs, it is time to calibrate the
system. (The “Calibrate” light will also light up for five seconds every time QUV switches into the UV cycle. This indicates that the system is energized and the timer is operating properly.) If “Calibrate” light begins to flash at less than 400 hours, immediately calibrate QUV by CR-10 radiometer.
5.3.3. Every 5600 hours, replace all the lamps in QUV. The Solar Eye controller has a built-in  alarm
system. If the irradiance measured by any of the sensors drops more than 5% below the Set
Point for more than 10 minutes, the “Actual Irradiance” digital display will begin to flash. If
“Actual Irradiance” begins to flash at less than 5600 hours, immediately recalibrate. If the lamps still cannot reach Set Point, replace the two lamps that the flashing sensor controls. Before
replacing the lamps, always shut off the main power and replace 2 lamps at the same time. If
you replace only one lamp, there will be a significant discrepancy in the top-to-bottom
irradiance uniformity.  Always re-calibrate the system after changing lamps.
6.D ATA C OLLECTION &A NALYSIS
Testing procedure:
A.Fix the “test” samples face up on sample holder (figure 6) or sample tray (figure 7).  Make sure
that there are no gaps between the sample holder and tray, and the sample is lying as flat as
possible.
Figure 6:  holder for mounting testing samples          Figure 7:  tray for mounting testing samples
B.Set the trays in the machine and place them in the middle of other empty sample
holders. It is necessary to keep the empty sample holders in the test chamber to fill all spaces in        the machine.
C.Turn on “main power” switch. Put on UV protection glasses and check that all UV
lamps are functional by removing one end panel of the machine and looking for a light
halo around all the lamps.
D. Note hour reading on “total time” dial. Remove the samples 24 hours after placing in
the  machine by turning off the “main power’ switch.
Caution!
Don’t look at lighted lamps without eye protection. UV lamps can cause
烟雾过滤器sunburn and eye inflammation.  If exposure to UV lamps is necessary, wear
UV absorbing goggles.  Protect skin with opaque clothing or a quality
sunscreen 5%PABA) or sun protection factor of 20, not a "suntan"
远程监控安防lotion.
E.  Compare tested samples to the control sample. Evaluate the yellowing/fading of white
parts or colored parts on a 1-5 scale as noted below:
5.0        No color yellowing / fading change (test strip remains original color)
4.5    Very little color yellowing / fading change
4.0    Slight color yellowing / fading change
3.5    Moderate color yellowing /fading change
3.0        Definite color yellowing /fading change
2.5        Significant color yellowing / fading change
2.0        Strong color yellowing / fading change
1.5    Very large color yellowing/fading change
1.0Complete color yellowing /fading change
F.    Report the “score” for all of  the samples.
