《滚⽯》杂志近年来⼀直忙于各种形式的评选与排名。早在1989年这份杂志曾做过⼀次“过去25年来最佳歌曲”的评选，那次滚⽯乐队的《（ICantGetNo ）Satisfaction 》排到了第⼀位，⽽第⼆名的正是本次评选的头牌《likearollingstone 》。在去年⼀次“摇滚史上最佳500张专辑”的评选中，披头⼠的《Sgt.PeppersLonelyHeartsClubBand 》成为最为重要的⼀张作品，它排到了第⼀位。 《历史上最伟⼤的500⾸歌曲》这次评选值得注意的是，⼊选前⼗名的只有⼀⾸来⾃上世纪90年代，剩下的全是60年代的作品。那唯⼀的⼀⾸是西雅图乐队涅磐1991年作品
《SmellsLikeTeenSpirit 》。⽽披头⼠有22⾸作品⼊选，接着是滚⽯与鲍伯·迪伦。他们分别有13⾸与12⾸上榜。作为⾃60年代见证摇滚史变迁的⽼牌杂志，《滚⽯》这般⾏为更像是在缅怀⼀个过去的时代，⼀个属于摇滚的⾦黄⾊的60年代。 迪伦的登顶歌曲来⾃其1965年的专辑《Highway 61Revisited 》。这⾸长达6分钟的歌打破了迪伦作为3分钟民谣歌⼿的⾝份，他开始成为⼀个主流歌⼿，并且将创作领域⾃民谣转移到了摇滚。《滚⽯》杂志资深编辑⼤卫·弗⾥克评价说：“从来没有⼀⾸流⾏歌曲，能够像它那样深刻地改变那个时代的商业体系与艺术观念。”这本杂志在过去的⼀次评选中，亦把1965年7⽉25⽇的鲍伯·迪伦当作“摇滚史上50个瞬间”之⼀。那天Newport 民谣⾳乐节在罗德岛举⾏。24岁的鲍伯·迪伦⾝穿⿊裤⼦和绿衬衫，登台⽤电吉他演出。这场不成功的演出，却开启了民谣摇滚（FOLKROCK ）时代的来临。
