[Class 94 (ii)] In an envelope making machine, afterrotary gumming mechanism G<1> has gummed a flap, co-operating rotary suction feeddevices C<11>, C4 one of which, C<11>, is in the form of a segment, fold and lightlycrease the gummed flap, whereupon the envelope is fed to a drier D. Envelope blankswith side and bottom flaps folded and the closure flap scored but lying open in trailingposition, are fed by rollers 12 and tables 11 to gumming and feeding means G<1>,G<11>, the gum being applied to the closure flaps by a rotating segment 24, drawinggum from a bath G by rollers 22, 23 ; the feed of the blanks being effected by sectors 33,rocked by a cam 30 so to miss being fouled by the gum roll 23, and resiliently urged byspring 28 into feeding contact with the lower roll G<11>. An auxiliary feed roll pair B<1>,B<11>, the upper one of which is carried by spring urged pivoted arms 42, now forwardthe gummed envelopes to the roll pair C<1>, C<11>, where a bar 50, carried by the rollC<1> which is supported resiliently by arms 47 rockable about a shaft S3, urges theenvelope flap 10 against a row of suction apertures 51 on roll C<11> whereby it iscarried towards the roll C4. This latter roll engages the envelope body through a suctionaperture 54 and the envelope is passed between the rolls C<11>, C4, bending the flap

backwardly, the hinge of which is pressed by an adjustable bar 60 against the roll C<11>.This latter is cut away at 62, 63 to allow the flap 10 to pass between the rolls C<11>, C4without having its gummed portion pressed against the envelope body. The suction at 51and 54 having been successively released, the envelope is further advanced by successivesuction being applied at 64. A similar means at C<5> feeds the partly folded envelopesto chain conveyers D which are comprised of U-shaped members 69 coacting with a tableT to feed the envelopes to a dryer. In a modification, where the paper &c. of theenvelope has a stiff quality, a pair of cam-operated spring- urged grippers assist inmaintaining the envelope against the suction apertures 51, the envelope, after actionthereon by rolls similar to those referenced C<11>, C<4> being fed to the conveyer Dby an oscillating suction arm.
