1.关于会议的几个词的小区别 conference, congress, assembly, meeting,

rally, council, session, convention, gathering。这些名词均含有会,会议之意。

conference : 正式用词,一般指大型会议,如政府工作会议、国际学术交流会议、各国之间的协商、会谈等。

Nearly all the members attended the conference.

(几乎全体成员都出席了这次会议。)

congress : 指国会、议会、代表大会等机构,尤指经选举产生的国家立法机构的大会或由这些机构召开的大会,也可指专业人员代表大会。

Congress has approved the new budget.

(国会已批准了这项新的预算。)

assembly : 多指一个通常有许多人参加、计划好的,为某一特殊目的而召集的会议。

He gave his famous speech before a public assembly.

(他在一次公众集会上发表了着名的演说。)

meeting : 普通用词,词义广泛。指一般性的会议,可用于任何场合。

What has the meeting decided?(与会者做出了什么决定?)

rally: 指大规模的众性政治集会。

Some higher officials attended the celebration rally.

(一些高级官员参加了庆祝大会。)

“五一”这天,北京大学五百多名校工和学生举行庆祝大会。

council : 在国际上多指由各国代表参加的政治会议,或常设的政治机构。在国内、地方上,此词多指常设的政务领导机构,如市政委员会等。

session : 一般指议会等召开的正式会议。

They will go into secret session.(他们将召开秘密会议。)

convention : 侧重指某一政党或团体为某一特殊目的而召开的会议;也可指学术团体的年会。

gathering : 指两人以上的聚会或集会,强调非正式性。

26. differentiate,distinguish,discriminate, differ

differentiate的主语也可以是人,此时可与 distinguish 或 discriminate 换用。此外,differentiate 的主语还可以是具备某种品质或特征的事物;

distinguish 指通过辨别事物的特征区别其他事物,通常与

between/among/from 连用;

discriminate 指分辨出细微差别;

distinguish与 discriminate 的主语通常为“人”

differentiate,distinguish,discriminate“有别于,区别于”

differ“不同”

27. strange, odd, peculiar, eccentric

strange,odd 和 peculiar 都是指“非常的,不平凡的”。 strange 指无法接受或理解的“奇怪”,是一般用语;

odd 意为指奇怪得令人迷惑不解;

peculiar 尤指令人烦恼或不愉快的“奇怪”, “古怪”。根据词义

eccentric 的语气最强,且专指个人行为或思想的古怪
