Practical Exploration of Ideological and Political
Education in Reading Teaching for English MajorsYinghui WangXi’an Fanyi UniversityAbstract: College education requires teachers to cultivate students in all aspects,
not only to impart professional knowledge, but also to carry out ideological and
political education for students, so as to achieve moral education. Teachers need to
integrate ideological and political education into the classroom teaching. Reading
teaching for English majors needs to be the main breakthrough for English teachers
to carry out ideological and political education. Teachers need to improve their own
ideological and political awareness, fully tap the ideological and political materials
in textbooks to smoothly develop ideological and political education. Based on
this, this paper first introduces the importance of ideological and political education
and the responsibilities of English teachers, and then introduces the methods of
ideological and political education in English reading teaching from two aspects,

study and daily life are becoming more and more colorful. During the university
period, students’ outlook on life, values, world and other ideas will change
greatly. This period is an important time point for students to receive ideological
and political education. However, most college teachers only pay attention
to knowledge, but ignore the development of students’ ideological and moral
character, and do not integrate ideological and political education into classroom
teaching. This may lead many students to pursue ideological satisfaction in other
wrong ways, which makes them lack interest in learning, have serious Internet

and political education makes them very vulnerable to the infection of bad ideas,
and eventually lose themselves in the drunkenness. Such serious consequences
can not be born for teachers and schools. In the instruction of accelerating the
construction of high-level undergraduate education and comprehensively improving
the ability of personnel training, the Ministry of education clearly pointed out that
ideological and political education should run through the whole process of high-level undergraduate education, strengthen ideological and political education
and professional education, and reasonably design the content of ideological and
political education according to the cultivation characteristics and professional
quality of various professional talents. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to
integrate ideological and political education into classroom teaching, so as to
cultivate talents with ability, thought and all-round development for the country
[1].
When teachers carry out ideological and political education, they should adhere to
the core idea of fostering virtue through education, and put ideological and political
work throughout the whole teaching activities. Considering the current ideological
and political level of college students and the national demand for personnel
training, colleges and universities should pay special attention to ideological and
political education while carrying out professional knowledge education
[2].2. The Importance of Ideological and Political Education and the
Important Responsibility of English TeachersThe ideological and political education requires teachers to integrate it into
teaching and it can make a difference in thinking awareness for students through
curriculum education, so as to finally achieve the goal of fostering virtue through
education. English discipline, as the subject that English majors most frequently
contact with, is the main position of ideological and political education for English
majors. In the process of learning English, students will come into contact with
the life, culture and thoughts of English native countries, which may weaken the
socialist core values in their hearts to a certain extent, and have a great impact
on the realization of the goal of ideological and political education. Therefore, in
the classroom teaching of English majors, teachers should pay special attention
to students’ ideological and political education, which brings great challenges to
English teachers. English teachers should shoulder the important responsibility of
ideological and political education, pay attention to improving their own ideological
and political situation, actively explore the ideological and political education
materials in English reading textbooks, and integrate the scientific education of
ideology and politics into English reading teaching.22
Practical Exploration of Ideological and Political Education in Reading Teaching for English Majors3. Ways of Ideological and Political Education in Reading Teaching for
English Majors(1) Improve Teachers’ Ideological and Political LevelTeachers are the guiders of students, and their every move may impact on
students’ behaviour. Therefore, teachers’ ideological and political level will also
have a great influence on students’ ideological and moral standard. Teachers
should improve their ideological and political level, so as to play a good and
correct guiding role in the ideological and moral construction of students. English
teachers should correctly understand and fulfill the mission of “preaching and
imparting work”, pay attention to the study of ideological and political education,
establish correct ideological and moral concepts, improve their own education
methods, adhere to the socialist core values, and train students to be talents with
good ideological and political concepts. English-major teachers should also
improve their political literacy and become a qualified ideological and political
educator. They have to actively expand their ideological and political curriculum in
combination with English reading teaching knowledge. Teachers should not only
spread the reading knowledge of English, but also cultivate students’ humanistic
literacy and guide them in ideological and moral aspects through classroom
teaching. In the process of reading teaching for English majors, teachers should
impart the ideological and political knowledge and help students establish a correct
outlook on life and values. In addition, while studying textbooks, English teachers
should not only pay attention to the professional knowledge, but also reasonably
combine ideological and political knowledge with English professional knowledge,
strengthen the study of traditional Chinese culture. Teachers need to organically
combine excellent foreign culture with traditional Chinese culture and increase the
cultural communication function of English in English reading class, achieving the
combination of the teaching of reading knowledge and ideological and political
knowledge [3]. Through the improvement of their own ideological and political level,
teachers will be able to carry out ideological and political education for students
more effectively.(2) Find the Material of Ideological and Political Education in TextbooksEnglish reading is a compulsory basic course for English Majors in colleges
and universities. The texts in the reading materials are novel in theme, wide in
topic and profound in connotation. There are rich introductions to the society,
economy, culture and life of English speaking countries. Teachers can use them as
an important source of ideological and political materials. Most English reading
materials contain different life philosophy and ideological and political resources,
which can bring students a lot of thinking, improve their humanistic quality
and provide fertile ground for the smooth teaching of Ideological and political

other majors. In English reading teaching, teachers need to give full play to the
advantages of these reading resources, integrate the ideological and political
education with the education of students’ professional knowledge, and put the goal
of Ideological and political education through the teaching, which is always the
work that teachers should strive to practice. For example, when teaching about
London, teachers can use the pictures of London’s scenic spots to import the
classroom content, and then introduce the historical background, historical status
and current international status of London. After a general understanding of the
learning content, teachers can make an analogy between Beijing and London, let
the students further discuss the famous scenic spots and long history of Beijing,
and make the students more deeply understand the differences between Chinese
and Western cultures and their respective cultural charm through the comparison of
the two cities. In this way, students can not only learn English related knowledge,
but also broaden their horizons and enhance their sense of national pride. Teachers
can effectively integrate ideological and political education into English classroom
learning by excavating the ideological and political education materials in English
textbooks. For example, they will feel that the author of many reading materials
shows good expectations between the lines in English reading classes. In an article,
the author wrote that he cherished the dream of a racing driver and finally realized
his dream through unremitting pursuit. There are many inspiring and touching
sentences in articles. Teachers should actively explore such material, which can
be used for ideological and political education. Teachers can ask students to recite
and translate these sentences, or motivate students to discuss the related topics on
these sentences. In this way, teachers not only arrange the English reading practice
and encourage students to work hard for their dreams, but also enables the students
to think deeply about the sentences through positive ideas and get influenced by
ideological and political education. Students can learn English knowledge and get
the ideological and emotional infection at the same time. Such an English reading
class can make students correct their learning attitude and strive for their dreams.
It also can establish their confidence in life, positively storm the challenges of life.
Only when teachers have a deep understanding of the English reading materials can
they fully explore the ideological and political education materials in the textbooks
and carry out ideological and political education in classroom learning.4. ConclusionIdeological and political education is indispensable in college education.
In order to cultivate talents with all-round ability in areas such as morals
intelligence,physical fitness, work and aesthetics, English teachers should fully
integrate ideological and political education into English classroom teaching,
so that students can not only learn English knowledge, but also receive good
