(For cover material)
Sample pre-treatment:
Water soaking procedure (BS 5651): The sample was immersed into 40℃ water which containing 0.5g/L of non-ionic
wetting agent for 30mins. Then rinse for 2min. After that, dry the specimen by any method suitable for the fabric type
Standard foam:
Non-fire retardant polyurethane foam corresponding to the specification set out in BS 3379 Type B Hardness grade 130
and of a density of 20-22 kg per m3.
Ignition source:
Source #0, Untipped cigarette, 1.0±0.1g, 68mm long, 9mm diameter, smouldering rate 50mm in 12±3mins
Source #1, burner inner tube= 6.5mm, butane flame height about 35-38mm;
Test procedure: After mocked-up,
S4p1: place the ignited cigarette on the junction line.
S5p1: applied the flame along the junction line between the seat and the back for 20s. Observe the sample according to
below requirements.
Requirements:
(A)S4p1: Smoldering Cigarette Test(ignition source 0)Criteria:
① Whether the evidence of progressive smoldering or flaming is observed in the interior and/or cover
② Whether progressive smoldering or flaming of the sample is observed at any time within one hour of placement of
the cigarette
③ Whether progressive smoldering is observed on final examination when dismantle assembly and examine internally
(B) S5p1: Butane Flame Test (ignition source 1)Criteria:
① Whether any evidence of flaming or progressive smoldering is observed in the interior and/or cover after 120s of the
removal of the burner tube.
② Whether progressive smoldering is observed on final examination when dismantle assembly and examine internally.
UKFR S2P1 #2 Butane flame test
(For non-foam filling)
Sample pre-treatment:
The sample shall be placed in indoor ambient condition for at least 72h, then conditioning in (20±5)C; R.H. (50±20) %
for at least 16h before testing;
Ignition source:
Source #2, burner inner tube= 6.5mm, gas flow rate = 160±5ml/min at 25℃, butane flame height about 145 mm;
Apply the ignition source for 40±1s;
Standard cover fabric:
The fabric shall be made of 100 per cent flame retardant polyester fibre. Its construction shall be woven to a
plain weave. The yarn in the warp shall be of 1.6 decitex fibre, spun to a linear density of 37 tex, Z twist at 420
turns per metre. The fabric shall be woven to 20.5 yarn threads per centimetre in the warp.
The yarn in the weft shall be of 3.3 decitex fibre spun to a linear density of 100 tex, Z twist at 550 turns per metre.
The fabric shall be woven to between 12.6 and 13 threads per centimetre in the weft.
The fabric finish shall be scoured and heat set. Its mass shall be 220 g per m2 plus or minus 5 per cent.
Test procedure: After mocked-up (foam and standard fabric), place the ignition source on the junction line between the
seat and the back for 40±1s, observe the sample according to below requirements.
Test Criteria:
Test Criteria
(A) Progressive smouldering
(Clause 4.1 of BS 5852: Part 2:1982)
① Any composite that produces externally detectable amounts of smoke, heat or glowing 30
minutes after the removal of the burner tube.
② Any composite that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue
the test and requires forcible extinction.
③ Any composite that smoulders until it is essentially consumed within the test duration relevant
to the source.
④ Any composite that smoulders to the extremities of the specimen viz. upper or lower
margins, either side or to its full thickness, within the duration of the test.
⑤ Any composite that, on final examination, shows evidence of charring other than
discolouration, more than 100mm in any direction apart from upwards from the nearest part of the
original position of the source.
(B) Flaming
(Clause 4.2 of BS 5852: Part 2:1982)
① Any composite that continues to flame for more than 120s after the removal of the burner tube.
② Any composite that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue
the test and forcible extinction is required.
③ Any composite that burns until it is essentially consumed within the test duration relevant to
the source
④ Any composite on which any flame front reaches the lower margins, either side or passes
through the full thickness of the specimen within the duration of the test.
UKFR S1P1 #5 crib test
(For Polyurethane foam in Slab or cushion form)
Sample pre-treatment:
The sample shall be placed in indoor ambient condition for at least 72h, then conditioning in (20±5)C; R.H. (50±20) %
for at least 16h before testing;
Ignition source:
Source #5 (BS 5852-2): Pine wood crib; Weight of crib: 17±1g;
Standard cover fabric:
The fabric shall be made of 100% flame-retardant polyester fibre.
The construction of the fabric shall be woven to a plain weave. The yarn in the warp shall be spun to a linear density of
37 tex ±10%. The yarn in the weft shall be spun to a linear density of 100 tex ±10%. The fabric shall be scoured and
heat set. The fabric shall be woven so as to have a finished fabric construction of:
a) (20.5 ±1) yarn threads per centimetre in the warp; and
b) (12.5 ±1) yarn threads per centimetre in the weft."
Its mass shall be 220 g/m2 ± 5%.
Test procedure: After mocked-up (foam and standard fabric), place the crib in the centre of the junction line between
the seat and the back, adding the 1.4ml propan-2-ol to the crib lint within 2min, ignite the crib and observe the sample
according to below requirements.
Test Criteria:
(A) Progressive Smouldering (Clause 4.1 of BS 5852: Part 2:1982)
① Any composite that produces externally detectable amounts of smoke, heat or glowing 60 minutes after ignition of
the crib.
② Any composite that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue the test and requires
forcible extinction.
③ Any composite that smoulders until it is essentially consumed within the test duration relevant to the source.
④ Any composite that smoulders to the extremities of the specimen viz. upper or lower margins, either side or to its
full thickness, within the duration of the test.
⑤ Any composite that, on final examination, shows evidence of charring other than discolouration, more than
100mm in any direction apart from upwards from the nearest part of the original position of the source.
(B) Flaming (Clause 4.2 of BS 5852: Part 2:1982)
① Any composite that continues to flame for more than 10 minutes after the ignition of the crib
② Any composite that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue the test and forcible
extinction is required.
③ Any composite that burns until it is essentially consumed within the test duration relevant to the source
④ Any composite on which any flame front reaches the lower margins, either side or passes through the full thickness
of the specimen within the duration of the test
(C) Mass Loss (Clause 5 in Schedule 1 Part1 of UK Regulations)
If failure against the criteria of clause 4 of BS 5852 : Part 2:1982 has occurred but only by way of damage exceeding
the limits defined in A ④, ⑤ and B ④ above and provided that the resultant mass loss is less than 60g the foam
passes the ignitability test
