英语翻译技巧——替代

替代(Replacement)

所谓“替代法”就是使用通一次、近义词或以另一角度的措词来实现词语代替，或以推演法译出词义以适应行文或表意的需要，在很多情况下这种方法更符合语感的需要。这种译词法也叫做“易词而译”，是翻译中的另一种变通手段。必须注意，使用替代法译词最重要的是译者对英语词义的准确而透彻的理解。毫无疑义，替代法是英汉翻译中的重要译词手段之一。适当地运用替代法，精心挑选替代词，可以去除汉语行文上的梗滞，其效果往往是“一词之易，全句生辉”。

(1) 汉译英时的替代

中国与西方国家在文化背景上差异很大，体现在语言上就更明显了。因此，如果汉语表达的内容和形式都不在英语读者的文化范围之内，就要尽可能地将汉语文化转换成英语文化，对在英语文化背景中缺乏所指或有文化冲突的词语进行替代，使英语读者易于理解。

a.英语词汇缺乏中文所指

如:明年的生肖属性是什么,

What’s the next year’s Zodiac Sign?(范仲英 译)

解析:英美文化没有把生肖与年份联系起来的习惯，因而不得不另替代。

b.汉语特有的习语或成语，英译时为求而替代

如:我们穷棒子闹翻身，是八仙过海，各显其能。(周立波《暴风骤雨》)

解析:“八仙过海，各显其能”是中国古代神话，也是歇后语在 英语中并无对应词，只能译为“shows his true worth”。

c.在英语中用摹形来替代与汉语形式相关的词汇

如:几何老师手拿一把丁字尺，走进了教室。

With a T square in his hand ,the teacher of geometry came

解析:摹形就是眼睛看到的形体如实地描绘出来。本句中“丁字尺”的形状与汉语中的“丁”字相似，译成英语只能用外形与“丁”字相似的“T”来代替。

d.汉语和英语文化内涵冲突而导致的词语替代

如:为头一人，头戴武巾。身穿团花战袍，白净面皮，三绺髭须，真有龙凤之表。(吴敬梓:《儒林外史》)

The leader of the band wore a military cap and flowered silk

costume. He had a clear complexion , his beard was fine, and

he looked every inch a king .

解析:此句中“龙凤之表”一词若直译，会给英语读者造成很大的理解困扰，在英语文化中“龙”和“凤”的动物形象并不具有积极意义，因而替代译为“every inch a king”。

(2) 汉译英时的替代

如上所述，在英译汉时，同样存在以上的情况，这就需要译者在

翻译过程中对英语在其文化语境中的实际应用及其交际功能保持高

度的意思，并尽可能全面地捕捉英语词汇所发出的真实信息，才能顺

利地进行替代和传达，为成功的译词奠定基础。

a. 汉语词汇缺乏英语词汇所指

如:„and then merciful ushers collected my piece of foolscap with all

the others and carried it up to the Headmaster’s table. (W. Churchill:

Harrow)

后来，仁慈的助教把我的那张考卷和别人的一起收走了，送到了

校长的办公桌上。(孙致礼 译)

解析:在本句中，“foolscap”一词，并无明确对应的汉语词汇。

如根据字典译为“大裁纸”的话，必会造成困惑和误解。根据上下文

的意思，是指作者一题也答不上来的那份考卷，因而替代为“考卷”。

b. 英语习语或词语，为求切而用汉语成语或习语替代

如:Depends, depends. I know criminals. Chicken livered, most of them.

(Agatha Christie : Three Act Tragedy )

这都看人的。我了解罪犯。他们大多都胆小如鼠。(思果 译)

解析:英语中有以“鸡肝”喻胆小的表达，但在汉语文化中无此

说法，因而替代为汉文化中常见的喻胆小的成语“胆小如鼠”。

c. 在汉语中用摹形来替代与英语语言形式相关的词汇

如:What they need now is a large quantity of Z iron.(Mortimer

他们目前需要的是大量的乙字铁。(冯庆华 译)

解析:汉语中“乙”字与“Z”比较相近，因而替代成“乙”。

d. 汉语和英语文化意涵冲突而导致的词语替代

如:“I know ,Dad”, she said, “I’m a selfish pig. I’ll think

about it„” (J. Galsworthy : A Modern Comedy)

“我知道，爸爸，”她说，“我自私自利，实在很蠢;但我会想想这件事的„„”。

解析:在英语中，称某人是只“Pig”，意在说他在某方面有猪的习性，虽然是个贬义词，其贬斥程度大大低于汉语里的“猪”。在汉语里说某人是“猪”是骂人的话，尤其是一个女孩子自称是“猪”会令人无法理解，因而替换成“很蠢”。

小结:替代的要旨是将词义动态化(即实现词义的可替换化) 从以上例句可以看出，无论英译汉还是汉译英，这两种语言的替代词义都灵活多变，但往往又是“万变不离其宗”，总是在保持基本意义的前提下，随着上下文而引申。“词义定译”是易词而译的宗旨，关键是将意义动态化。因此，在进行翻译时，必须善于判断原文中词语的意义可以怎样移动，选择恰当的译文对应词，做出合适的替代。
