2. In the fall of 2009, as the theater reporter for The Times, I called Angela Lansbury to confirm a

sensitive piece of information. I was writing a story revealing the kinds of special assistance that

some actors used to remember their lines.

I had heard that Ms. Lansbury, who was then 84, had used an earpiece earlier that year while playing

on Broadway. I remember being nervous as I dialed her number. Nervous about whether I could

persuade her to open up to me. Most nervous about interviewing a star who meant something to me

and my father. However, Angela Lansbury, filling me with great admiration, was game to talk, quick

with a laugh, frank and honest. I’d assumed that aging and memory were vulnerabilities (弱点); she

saw them as facts and addressed them confidently.

Of using an earpiece on Broadway, she told me: “If we’re going to play important roles at our age,

we’re going to ask for some support if we need it.”

Ms. Lansbury brought a combination of dignity and frankness to her life and work. She may have

lacked the classic good looks and voice of her era, as she openly acknowledged, but being who she

was, she found stardom and a large number of fans through raw talent and risk-taking.

By the time I interviewed Ms. Lansbury, my father was in his 70s and showing signs of dementia

(痴呆). I was overly sensitive to the facts of aging and tended to see it as a vulnerability better kept

private, as my father did. After interviewing her, I mentioned her earpiece story to my father as I

persuaded him to wear the hearing aids that he had refused several times. When it came to

persuading him to accept a caregiver — a measure of special assistance, no doubt— star-powered

inspiration did also help me win the argument, which gave me an even deeper appreciation for Ms.

Lansbury.

1. Why did the author call Ms. Lansbury?

A.To interview her for an article.

B.To invite her to perform on Broadway.

C.To learn from her how to remember lines.

D.To inform her of new kinds of special assistance.

2. How did Ms. Lansbury impress the author over the phone?

A.She was rather nervous.

B.She talked freely and openly.

C.She took her vulnerabilities seriously.

D.She had a good memory despite her age.

3. What does the author think makes Ms. Lansbury a star?

A.Her unique voice.

B.Her classic good looks.

C.Her attractive personality.

D.Her abilities to balance life and work.

4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?

A.To prove Ms. Lansbury’s opinion on aging.

B.To show Ms. Lansbury’s impact on him and his father.

C.To explain the relationship between him and his father.

D.To call on more people to show respect for Ms. Lansbury.

3. An African ant seems to be the only known species besides humans that can detect infected

wounds and treat them with antimicrobial(抗菌的)medicine.

Matabele ants are relatively large insects in sub-Saharan Africa that attack termite(白蚁)nests for

food. This is risky because termiter mests are defended by soldiers that can bite the ants, tearing off

their legs.

Erik Frank at the Universitv of Wurzburg in Germany previously observed that Matabele ants

injured during these attacks are carried back to their home nests, where “nurses” lick their wounds

clean. Now, he and his colleagues have discovered that these nurses may tell if wounds are infected

and treat them with an antimicrobial substance produced in their backs.

The researchers filmed injured ants receiving wound care. Nurse ants licked their wounds clean and

applied a substance they collected from their own backs or the backs of the injured ants.

A chemical analysis of the substance revealed it contains several proteins and organic compounds

with structures similar to known antibiotics(抗生素) . Of the infected ants that received wound care,

90 percent survived. Because nurse ants only apply the antimicrobial treatment in some cases, Frank

and his colleagues believe the insects can detect a wound’s infection status.

In line with this, they discovered that ants with infected wounds produce different chemicals in their

outer shells. These chemicals are commonly used to communicate with other ants, suggesting

injured insects signal their infection status to others so they can receive appropriate treatment.

“I wouldn’t be surprised because insects are full of tricks,” says Ken Cheng at Macquarie University

in Sydney.

Matabele ants may nurse their nestmates in order to maintain a critical population of workers to

attack termite nests, he says. As many as 22 percent of these assailants lose one or two legs during

each termite hunt meaning “the workforce would reduce too quickly without this medical treatment,”

says Cheng.

1. What do we know about Matabele ants?

A.They can notice infected wound.

B.They are of relatively small size.

C.They fight themselves for food.

D.They tear off legs on purpose.

2. What do wounded ants do to help the treatment of their infections?

A.They send off antibiotics in their bodies.

B.They balance the states of their wounds.

C.They produce special chemicals as signals.

D.They lick their wounds clean for treatment.

3. What does the underlined word “assailants” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Defenders.

C.Tourists.

4. What is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Animals Make Medicine to Treat Themselves

B.Termites Cause Great Damage to Matabele Ants

C.Matabele Ants Are Found to Be Strong Defenders

D.Matabele Ants Treat Wounds with Antimicrobial Substances

4. The curb cut (下斜路缘). It’s a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it,

daily life might be a lot harder—in more ways than one. Pushing a baby stroller onto the curb,

skateboarding onto a sidewalk or taking a full grocery cart from the sidewalk to your car—all these

tasks are easier because of the curb cut.

But it was created with a different purpose in mind.

It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a

sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to

help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. So, activists from Berkeley, California, who

B.Attackers.

D.Victims.

also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help people

dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently.

I think about the “curb cut effect” a lot when working on issues around health equity (公平). The

first time I even heard about the curb cut was in a 2017 Stanford Social Innovation Review piece by

PolicyLink CEO Angela Blackwell. Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, that there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one

group hurts another.” What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society

creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute

fully, everyone wins.”

There are multiple examples of this principle at work. For example, investing in policies that create

more living-wage jobs or increase the availability of affordable housing certainly benefits people in

communities that have limited options. But, the action also empowers those people with

opportunities for better health and the means to become contributing members of society—and that

benefits everyone. Even the football huddle (围成一团以秘密商讨) was initially created to help

deaf football players at Gallaudet College keep their game plans secret from opponents who could

have read their sign language. Today, it’s used by every team to shield the opponent from learning

about game-winning strategies.

So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly

onto a sidewalk—think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of

exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but all of us.

1. By “might as well have been Mount Everest” (paragraph 3), the disability rights leader implies

that a six-inch curb may become ________.

A.as famous as the world’s highest mountain

B.an almost impassable barrier

C.a connection between people

D.a most unforgettable matter

2. According to Angela Blackwell, many people believe that ________.

A.it’s fair to give the disadvantaged more help than others

B.it’s impossible to have everyone be treated equally

C.it’s necessary to go all out to help the disabled

D.it’s not worthwhile to promote health equity

3. Which of the following examples best illustrates the “curb cut effect” principle?

A.Spaceflight designs are applied to life on earth.

B.Four great inventions of China spread to the west.

C.Christopher Columbus discovered the new world.

D.Classic literature got translated into many languages.

4. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A.Everyday items are originally invented for people with disabilities.

B.Everyone in a society should pursue what is in his or her interest.

C.A disability rights leader changed the life of his fellow men.

D.Caring for disadvantaged groups may finally benefit all.

5. Personal safety is a concept that we all need to feel at peace and comfortable. Many people know

of Maslow’s theory, which places safety second on the list. 1 Today, this means being able to sleep

at night without being threatened, having job security, as well as mental health, and emotional well-being.

In terms of workplace safety, training companies such as Strat Training offer courses for employers

and employees to take part in. 2 They cover safety in industries such as driving, construction,

transport, lifting, and so on.

For personal safety, there are a number of things that an individual can do to feel safer. 3 For

example, have a boundary that separates your home from the public, including gates, locks, fences

and alarms.

People can also invest in some protective devices so that they are able to better defend themselves if

they face danger. However, it’s also important to use your natural safety measure-common sense. 4

Otherwise, you’ll put yourself in harm’s way.

5 When driving, pay attention and obey the rules of the road. Stop signs are to warn people and to

avoid danger. Many accidents happen due to people being careless and many issues can be avoided

if people pay more attention to safety and obey rules and regulations.

A.Do not walk alone late at night in a dangerous area.

B.Ensuring that your home is as safe as possible is important.

C.Educate your children at an early age to be aware of dangers.

D.These courses ensure physical and mental safety while at work.

E.His famous theory divides human motivations into seven parts.

F.Most rules and regulations are put in place by society for safety.

G.This means that after satisfying our physical needs, we need to feel safe.

The earliest piece of guqin in China, 2 was unearthed in Hubei province in 2016, 3 (date) back to

the Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century -256BC). The body of a guqin is made of lacquered wood and the

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a train to Smithville, a man happened to sit down next to a young man no more than 17 years old.

Because the boy was tense, the man wondered what could be worrying him. Whatever it was, the

boy’s tension was clear.

The boy kept staring out of the window, paying no attention to anyone else on the train. The man

opened up a book and started reading. Now and then, he would look up and see the boy’s face

pressed against the window. He sensed that the boy was fighting to keep from crying.

Finally, the boy asked the man, “Do you know what time it is? And do you know when we are to

arrive at Smithville?” The man gave the boy the time. Then the boy told the man the whole story of

his life. “Four years ago,” he said, “I did something bad hurting my dad, so bad that I had to run

away from home. I couldn’t face my father. So I left without even saying goodbye to him. Since

then, I have worked here and there. I never stayed very long in one place. I’ve been pretty lonely.

Until finally, I decided that I want to go back to my father and apologized to him.”

The man went on to ask, “Does your father know you’re coming?” And the boy responded, “He

knows I’m coming, but I don’t know if he will be there. I sent him a letter. I didn’t know if he would

still want me back. I wasn’t sure if he would forgive me. So in my letter, I told him that if he wanted

me to come home, he could put a sign on a tree which is a few hundred yards before the railroad

station in Smithville. I told him that I would look for a yellow ribbon(丝带)on one of the branches of

that tree as the train passes. If there is a yellow ribbon on the tree, then I’ll get off. If not, then I’ll

just keep on riding to wherever this train goes.” The two of them were now waiting for Smithville.
