On July 28th, 1976, an earthquake hit Tangshan and its

surrounding areas in China, reaching 7.8 large scales. Hundreds

of schools collapsed and thousands of students buried.

According to the official records, nearly 242,769 people died and

164,000 were injured. This makes the Tangshan earthquake one

of the top ten deadly earthquakes in history.

The high loss of lives caused by the earthquake can be

attributed to the time and how it suddenly struck. Due to the lack

of warning systems and the awareness of earthquakes, most

people were still fast asleep at 4 AM and not ready to evacuate.

The seismic waves spread far, with damage in nearby cities

such as Beijing and Tianjin. The tremors were felt 760 kilometers

away in Xian. The infrastructure in the city of Tangshan was

almost ruined in the terrible earthquake. Its transportation,

electricity, communications, and other utilities had also been

devastated. The cost was a total of 10 billion yuan.

A tsunami was generated by a massive earthquake off its

western coast on 26 December 2004 in Indonesia and the wave

traveled as far as Africa.

The deadly tsunami killed about 290,000 people, one third of

them children. The disaster left nearly 5 million people homeless.

The disaster affected at least 12 countries. Among them,

Indonesia was hit the hardest by the tsunami, with more than

160,000 dead. Thousands more were killed in Thailand and Sri

Lanka.

Earthquakes at 9 large scale are the main reason for the

tsunami. It was the strongest earthquake since the 1960 and 1964

earthquake in Chile and the second-largest since 1900. The heavy

casualties caused by the earthquake and tsunami were due to a

lack of awareness of tsunamis, which the local population had

not experienced in over 100 years. In addition, the countries

along the Indian Ocean did not take the threat of tsunami

seriously and did not establish an effective tsunami warning

system.

The Indian Ocean tsunami slowed down the growth of the

affected countries such as Sri Lanka and Thailand. Infrastructure

has been washed away in many areas in Asian countries such as

Sri Lanka, Thailand, India.

Australia is being ravaged by the worst wildfire seen in

decades. With large swathes, the country was devastated since

the fire season began in September. So far, the wildfires have

been burning out of control for 5 months.

Summer is the fire season in Australia. The hot, dry climate

and flammable plants makes Australia one of the most fire-prone

areas in the world.

The wildfires have destroyed more than 4 million hectares of

bushland. Over half a billion animals have been killed directly or

indirectly in fires that have scorched Australia. This may lead to

the extinction of some endangered animals.

So far at least 26 people have lost their lives. Over 2,300

homes have been destroyed. More than 50,000 homes were

reported with no electricity. In some affected towns, there was no

available drinking water. Thousands of people are suffering from

dangerous and toxic smoke from the fire and millions of dollars

of infrastructure and farm machinery destroyed.
