一原文抽象，译文具体

（一）英语抽象名词具体化

从词类的使用来看，英语多用名词，有静，虚，抽象的特点；汉语多用动词，有动，实，具体的特点。而且，英语是一种曲折语言，词类转化现象相当普遍，抽象名词中，有许多为英语所独有，在汉语中很难到对应词。因此，在英译汉时，需要运用词类的转化，意义的引申或加适当的范畴词使其具体化，以便符合汉语的习惯，请看例句：

I marveled at the relentless determination of the rain. （词义引申）

句中的determination意义较抽象，不可直译，要根据语境进行适当引申，译为“无休无止”或“下个不停”。因此全句可译为：雨无情地下个不停，另我惊讶不已。All the regularities of the

students in that university resulted in punishment.（加范畴词）句中regularities意义抽象模糊，在不同语境下有不同译法（更多例句参见后面的练习部分）。本句中的irregularities可加范畴词使之具体化，是汉语常用的特指手段：在那所大学，学生的任何越轨行为都受到惩罚。

Her indifference kept all the visitors away from the exhibition

hall.（加范畴词）她的冷漠态度把许多参观者挡在展览馆门外。

其他例子如：evaporation 蒸发作用，fault-finding吹毛求疵的做法loftiness崇高品质allergy过敏反应jealous 嫉妒心理dejection

沮丧情绪lightheartedness轻松愉快的心境

（二）用具体的词语阐释抽象的词义，在译文中补充外围语义成分。英语抽象词语的涵义比较笼统，概括，虚泛，在汉语里很难到对应词，这时常常借助具体的词语来解释补充其抽象的语意成分。

Teaching gives me pace and variety, and challenge and the

opportunity to keep on learning.

从事教学使我的工作进程有了规律，使我的生活变得丰富多彩，既向我提出了挑战，也为我提供了不断学习的机会。

Tell me, do our years together mean nothing?

难道我们多年的厮守就这样一钱不值吗？

Public opinion is demanding more and more urgently that

something must be done about air pollution. 公众舆论越来越强烈地要求对空气污染采取必要措施。

A nice enough young fellow, you understand, but nothing

upstairs.

小伙子年轻英俊，你知道的，可脑子里却是一张白纸。

No country should claim infallibility. 任何国家都不应自称一贯正确。

His rambling propensity strengthened with years. 岁月添增，游兴更浓。

（三）用形象性词语使抽象意义具体化

12）I talked to him with brutal frankness. 我对他讲的话，虽然逆耳，却是忠言。13）He was open now to charges of wilful

blindness. 这时人们指责他装聋作哑14）He waited for arrival with

a frenzied agitation. 他等着她来，急得像热锅上的蚂蚁。

unable to think straight.

他这些天来心里如同十五个吊桶打水，七上八下，老是宁静不下来。

二原文具体，译文抽象

一般人认为，西方人喜欢抽象，中国人喜欢具体，因此英译汉时往往运用化抽象

为具体的方法。这只是问题的一个方面，在英译汉时，抽象与具

体的转换其实是双向的：原文抽象的概念可以化为具体，具体的概念也可以化为抽象。

（1）从认知的角度来看，（2）任何语言中都充满了隐喻。为了使语言的表达形象生动，（3）人们往往用意象表达抽象的概念，（4）用部分代替整体。man for the field and woman for the hearth;

man for the sword and woman for the needle;

man with the head and woman with the heart;

man to command and woman to obey

folly of offending a good tenant ---relaxed a little in a laconic

style of chipping off his pronouns and auxiliary verbs, and

句中his pronouns and auxiliary verbs不可直译为“代词和助动词”，由于英语中的代词与助动词可以表达委婉的说法，所以整个句子可译为：

也许出于谨慎，他认为得罪一个好房客是愚蠢的，语言便稍稍委婉些，提出了他认为我会感兴趣的话头。

（二）英语中成语，谚语与熟语等民族性习惯表达法多用具象概念来传递抽象概念，语词中间蕴涵着丰富的文化意义。这些文化负载词的语用意义，文化内涵在两中语言中截然不同，产生的联想也大不一样。所以在翻译时，只好舍弃其具体形象，而保留其意义。

A good conscience is a soft pillow. 良心过得去，睡觉才安稳。

Kissing doesn’t last; cookery does. 甜言蜜语不可靠，粗茶淡饭才长久。

Love is the mother of love. 情生情，爱生爱。

Love lives in cottages as well as in courts 爱情不分贵贱。
