I have been working at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge for 20 years. My day
starts at 5:30, when I have two cups of black coffee while listening to the radio.
Recently, I’ve been using the morning to work on a book I’m now writing. I’m in the
hospital just before8:00. If it’s a nice day, I’ll cycle the fifteen miles to my office, but
my favorite way of getting to work is on my motorbike.
My week is divided into operating and non-operating days. Monday and Tuesday
are my operating days and I like to come in early and stay late to check the progress
of my patients. During the rest of the week, I’m in clinics or working in research.
On a typical operating day, I will have two to three operations. Some of the
complex operations can take as long as ten to twelve hours. In certain cases, I think
about them for days, or even weeks, beforehand.
Last week, I had one of these cases which took a lot of thinking beforehand. The
patient was a young man who had a rare heart illness. He needed an operation
immediately, or he would probably die. I planned the operation in my head while at
the dentist’s.
Like many other doctors, I am always on call for my patients. When I do get to
have some time to myself, I enjoy creating crossword puzzles. I even make them for

Do you take your own shopping bag with you when you go shopping? Most
people don’t. It’s easier to just ask for a plastic bag when you’re checking out. But the
truth is that most of these bags will end up in the ocean, killing wildlife and even
ending up in the seafood that we eat.
Plastic pollution has become a major problem around the world. China creates
about 59 million tons of plastic waste each year, while the US creates about 37
million tons, according to a 2018 scientific report.
But two sisters from Bali are doing their part to stop this from happening. They
started a global campaign called Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB) . Its members
encourage people to use fewer plastic bags. They also advise local leaders in their area
to ban the bags.
Melati Wijsen, 17, and her sister Isabel, 15, started BBPB in 2013 after learning
about great leaders like Nelson Mandela and Lady Diana in school. They asked
themselves, “What can we do as children living in Bali, now, to make a difference?”
The Wijsen sisters have spoken to 20,000young people about the dangers of
plastic. They also created two educational booklets for primary schools in Indonesia.
They are crazy about their work, especially when it comes to protecting Bali.
Their hard work pushed officials in Bali to make the island refuse plastic bags by
2018.
The sisters have no plans to stop any time soon. Though they know there will be
difficulties along the way, they think their hard work will pay off. “Were not telling
you it’s going to be easy. We’re telling you it’ going to be worth it,” Isabel said.

Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art. These
usually try to represent(代表) the things that are of great importance in life such as
love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are
turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming.
He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at
festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper.
When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for
all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Paper cutting has been around for more than 1,500 years. Paper cutting sounds
very easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut
with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, fish, animals, and things about
Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls
as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are not big but they look very
real. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and
then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then
polished .Finally, materials like wood or paper are added to make different things. It
takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the
love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.
