I have the courage to
A philosopher once said that a man without courage is a
slave. So what is courage? It is courage to face difficulties
without fear, courage to bear humiliation for the sake of
the overall situation, and courage to sacrifice for justice.
Today, however, I would like to say that one kind of
courage is to dare to ask questions.
In My Best Teacher, Mr. Whiteson is training his students.
He hoped that every child would dare to ask questions
without fear of authority under the reminder of the O
point. If you have any questions, put them forward, and
don't let your brain sleep. Mr. Whiteson made his
students understand this truth and let them benefit
from it for life.
Throughout the ages, all those great creators and
discoverers have a heart that dare to ask questions.
Among them, Galileo, the great physicist, is a more
prominent scientist.
As we all know, Galileo boldly questioned Aristotle's
theory that "if two objects fall from the same height at
the same time, the heavier one must fall first". He
believed that under such conditions, two objects should
land at the same time, regardless of the order.
At that time, Aristotle was regarded as a "prophet", and
his theory could not be questioned. So we can imagine
how people were dissatisfied, disdained, ridiculed and
angry with Galileo's suspicion. However, under great
pressure, Galileo still insisted on his question and made
an experiment publicly on the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We can't help thinking that if Galileo did not have the
courage to ask questions and challenge authority, would
he succeed? The answer is no.
This shows how important the courage to ask questions
is to us, but it is this important courage that is gradually
missing.
Someone once did a questionnaire survey: "There were
43 sailors on the Willy, 24 barrels of wine. How old was
the captain of the Willy?"
They distributed questionnaires to primary schools in
France and Shanghai for students to answer this
question. However, the results of the test were amazing
- 90% of French pupils thought that the question was
wrong and could not be answered, while only 10% of
students in Shanghai answered like this! The other 90%
of Shanghai students answered honestly, "43+24=67
(years old)".
Why do only 10% of primary school students in China
answer correctly? Isn't it because most students lose
their courage to ask questions under the "authority"?
I think we all need to think about this answer.
