A

For years and years people in USA have been

saying that the railways are d___1___ . “We can do

without railways.” People say…as if motorcars and

planes have made the railways u___2___ . We all

keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose

money, and that they’re dying .But this is far from the

truth: in these days of expensive oil, the railways have

become highly competitive with motorcars and planes.

If you are i___3___ to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes.

And they have much in c___4___ with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway.

What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn’t leave you up

as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does, in

e___5___ traffic jams, and a single train carry goods which no plane or a motorcar could ever do.

Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a

s___6___, less troubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy

the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for

we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more.

Soon we will be w___7___ why we spent so much on motorcars we can’t use because we have not

enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.

【答案及解析】

1. dead

后面说我们可以没有铁路,说明铁路没有实用性,也即形象化词汇“铁路已死”

3. intending

后面说了一些飞机和铁路的共同点,have sth in common是固定词组表示有共同点

5. endless

2 / 5

后面说的是开汽车的缺点,这里放在名词交通堵塞前面应该用形容词,endless表示无穷无尽的

6. smooth

The case for college has been accepted without

question for more than a generation. All high school

graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and

statistical evidence, because college will help them earn

more money, become "better" people, and learn to be more

r______1_____ citizens than those who don't go.

But college has never been able to work its m____2______for everyone. And now that close to

3 / 5

half our high school graduates are attending, those who don't f__3__ the pattern are becoming more

numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students

interfere with each other's experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense

competition for a_____4____ to graduate school. Other find no stimulation in their studies, and

drop out—often encouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves—they are spoiled and they

are expecting too much. But that is a condemnation of the students as a whole, and doesn't explain

all campus unhappiness. Others b____5______the state of the world, and they are partly right. We

have been t____6_____ that young people have to go to college because our economy can't absorb

an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no

longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds, .

Some adventuresome educators and watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may

not be the best, the proper, the only place for every young person after the completion of high

school. We may have been looking at all those surveys and statistics upside d____7____, it seems,

and through the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences. Perhaps college doesn't

make people intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, or quick to learn things—may it is just the other

way around, and intelligent, ambitious, happy, liberal, quick-learning people are merely the ones

who have been a____8_____to college in the first place. And p____9_____ all those successful

college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not. This is

heresy to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good, more has

to be much better. But c_____10______evidence is beginning to mount up.
