After winning the gold medal in the women’s 10-meter platform diving competition in
the Tokyo Olympics on Aug 5, 14-year-old Quan Hongchan has caught the attention of the
nation. Not only because of her flawless performance, but also for the innocence she
displayed while speaking with the media. Quan said her dream is to save enough money to
treat her sick mother, buy snacks, and go to an entertainment park and a zoo.
Were it not for the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics due to the COVID- 19
pandemic, Quan would not have participated in the Games as she only joined the national
team last year. Quan is the third child of her parents who live in a village in Zhanjiang,
Guangdong province. The city of Zhanjiang has been a cradle of elite Chinese divers through
the years, producing the likes of Lao Lishi, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games, and He
Chong, who ranked first at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
During a visit to Maihe Primary School, Chen Huaming, the diving coach at Zhanjiang
Sports School, noticed Quan was more agile (敏捷的) and jumped much higher than other
kids. After giving her a try on a diving board, he instantly knew he had discovered a true
talent. Quan was not the only youngster to impress Chen, but he admitted she was the one
that always practiced the hardest.
Now Quan has become a sporting sensation. Her previously quiet rural home has
become a must-see place for not only locals, but also livestreaming hosts and business people,
who come for various purposes, all of which are aimed at trying to capitalize on the national
attention her success story has attracted.

At some point in our lives, we all snore. A cold or allergy can block nasal passages, a
few drinks too close to bed will automatically relax tongue, palate and throat muscles—and
therefore we know that we’re unconsciously forcing air past those soft tissues, causing
vibrations that escape as a snore.
“Snoring can be normal and not something to worry about,” said sleep specialist
Rebecca Robbins, an instructor in the division of sleep medicine for Harvard Medical School.
But snoring can also be a key sign of obstructive sleep apnea (阻塞性睡眠呼吸暂停), a
serious sleep disorder in which people actually stop breathing for 10 seconds or more at a
time. “When it’s loud snoring, or it’s interrupted by pauses in breathing, that’s where we start
to get concerned,” Robbins said.
It’s estimated that at least 25 million Americans and 936 people worldwide may suffer

B.Honest and strong-willed.
D.Easy-going and brave.
from obstructive sleep apnea, with many more undiagnosed. It’s called “obstructive sleep
apnea” because unlike central sleep apnea —in which the brain occasionally skips telling the
body to breathe — obstructive sleep apnea is due to a closure of the airways by weak, heavy
or relaxed soft tissues.
“You’re making the effort with your belly and your chest to try to get the air in and out,
but because of the block in the upper airway, you can’t. Often you aren’t aware of this
struggle, but it can be very, very scary for anyone watching,” said sleep specialist Dr. Raj
Dasgupta, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the
University of Southern California. If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea puts you at a high
risk for hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or depression, even an early death,
according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
8.What’s Rebecca Robbins’s attitude towards snoring?
A.Indifferent. B.Objective. C.Negative. D.Positive.
9.According to the passage, what’s the reason for obstructive sleep apnea?
A.Bad sleeping habits.
C.Infection from family members.
10.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Most people who have obstructive sleep apnea have been diagnosed.
B.Most people who have obstructive sleep apnea realize their breathing difficulties.
C.There is no need to worry about any type of snoring.
D.Obstructive sleep apnea may lead to a variety of diseases.
11.What will the author write about in the following paragraph of the passage?
A.The dangers of obstructive sleep apnea.
B.The history of American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
C.The importance for people to realize the existence of obstructive sleep apnea.
D.The scientific methods for treating obstructive sleep apnea.
Back in 1933, a man called George Spicer and his wife were driving along a road near
Loch Ness. Suddenly, a weird animal with a long neck crossed in front of so the
Spicers claimed. Ever since then, the Loch Ness monster has been a household name,
although myths of a terrifying creature in the Loch date back to the Dark Ages.
Since the Spicers’ experience, scientists have been wondering whether such an animal

D.Unhealthy eating habits.
might really exist in the Loch’s murky depths. Research teams have patiently watched Loch
Ness’s surface for weeks at a time, submarines have explored its deep, dark waters, and
underwater cameras and sonar have searched for it. Most of this work happened from the
1960s to 1980s, during a ‘golden age’ of Nessie hunting.
Yet no monster has been found. Nevertheless, there have been more than 1,000 reported
sightings in total, and every year tourists visit the Loch in the hope of catching a glimpse of a
monster. But there is no reason to think that anyone has really seen Nessie. Instead, they have
seen seals, birds, swimming deer and unusual waves.
Despite this, the idea that Nessie might be real is still popular. So earlier this year,
Professor Neil Gemmell from the University of Otage in New Zealand led a trip to Loch Ness,
using a new scientific technique to find Nessie and solve the mystery once and for all. He set
out to search for something called ‘environmental DNA’, or eDNA for short.
EDNA has helped us find all kinds of rare, shy and even extinct animals and plants, so
Gemmell wondered if eDNA could be collected from samples of water taken from different
points of Loch Ness. He put together a research team, raised the money needed to complete
the project , and set to work. Right now, we are still waiting for the results from Gemmell’s
project. But even if eDNA for Nessie is not discovered, the project is still useful, because it
could help provide a complete list of every plant and animal species living in Loch Ness.
12.What’s the meaning of the underlined word?
A.Uneasy. B.Dark. C.Dizzy. D.Untrue.
13.Which method was not used during the 1960s and 1980s to prove the existence of the
Loch Ness monster?
A.Observation over the Loch Ness surface.
C.Fishing activities.
14.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The Loch Ness monster has been witnessed many times.
B.People who claim to have seen the Loch Ness monster may have been mistaken.
C.EDNA was used for the first time in the search for the Loch Ness monster.
D.The project of Gemmell will be considered a failure if evidence of Nessie is not found.
15.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.Will We Ever Find Nessie?
B.Are the Sightings of Nessie Real?

A research paper is a long essay in which writers present their perspective on a topic
using independent sources. It is a proven fact that finding reliable and valid sources for
research papers is your first and primary task. ____16____ Here’s how to gather the
information from sources before you start writing.
Is
the
author
a
respected
authority
in
the
field?
The credibility of an author is very important in determining the quality of sources.
____17____ But such claims must be confirmed. Look for the author’s academic background,
and professional associations. You can search the web for the author or search DISCOVERY
to see what also the author has written.
Is
the
publisher
reputable?
University and academic presses publish high-quality material that has been
peer-reviewed. Experts assess the merits of the paper before it is published, which ensures its
quality. ____18____ Government or educational sites — ones that have names with gov or
edu — are usually reliable.
Does
the
source
contain
any
bias?
Bias is not necessarily disqualifying, but you need to determine whether the source
favors a certain side of an issue. For example, if an article says that petrol companies do not
represent a danger to the environment, check what other sources are cited. If most of the
sources are from oil companies, there is probably bias.
____19____
In general, sources should be within the past 10 years for subjects in which information
changes quickly (science, technology, medicine). Consider whether the age of a source
adversely affects its usefulness to your research. No matter what the date of publication is, it
is your responsibility to be sure that all of your sources contain information that is relevant
and accurate.
Now that you have your notes from your sources, it is time to write your first draft, and
you must include specific information from your source to support your ideas. ____20____
试卷第6页,共11页
— but if you can collect the right resources from the start, you’re halfway there!
A.How current is the information?
B.Does the author agree or disagree with my ideas?
C.If you are using a website, make sure it is reputable.
D.Putting together a top-grade essay is a demanding task.
E.Many people on the Internet describe themselves as experts.
F.Although it is not a simple or quick process, it is possible to do it on your own.
G.When using a computer for searching sources, make sure to respect the library’s policies.

Ken Scott kicked off the covers and leapt out of bed at his home in the Rocky Mountain
town of Mullan, Idaho. He’d just heard on the radio that the nearby Silver Mountain Resort
had been blessed with nearly a foot and a half of new snow. As an experienced ski addict, he
didn’t want to miss this big golden opportunity. These conditions are what skiers live for.
When Scott reached Silver Mountain’s locker room, he came across his friend Paul, a
former ski instructor who had also been a regular on these slopes for more than two decades.
Both of them were exhilarated. Before setting off, it was Paul’s routine to check his phone
tightly fixed inside his parka (风
雪外套). For the next hour the pair skied on various runs
under a lightly dull sky, making fresh tracks. They were both in a playful mood, laughing as
they tackled the steep runs.
Almost immediately, the snow beneath their feet gave way. In a millisecond, Paul
realized what was happening. “Avalanche! (雪崩)” he yelled to Scott, who was not far behind.
Scott responded. The sudden snow slide caused fear in his voice. “This is happening!”
Instantly, both were hit by a mass of snow that would hit and carry them some 500 feet down
the mountain. Scott felt it surrounding and enclosing him, moving quickly up his back and
over his shoulders, then heavy against his neck. Snow filled the space in front of him and
piled up around the whole of him. Paul, too, was swept downhill.
They remembered the avalanche survival lessons they had learned. Keep your head up.
Try to swim. Stay on top of the snow. But the snow was too powerful and they felt themselves
rolling like a load of clothes in a washing machine. When Scott finally came to rest, he was
lying on his left side and completely buried, skis and poles still attached.
