Ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning and thank you for coming to my speech today. My

topic is about being a translation interpreter.

As a translator, I believe that we operate in an ever-changing and

dynamic world. A world whose linguistic and cultural diversity has

affected every aspect of modern-day life. From international trade

agreements, diplomatic discussions between foreign governments,

to personal communication between tourists in a foreign land,

translation has become imperative to facilitate cross-cultural

communication.

Being a translation interpreter is not just merely translating from

one language to another. It is a process of transferring not only the

words, but also the meanings, connotations, cultural nuances,

idioms, and metaphors from the source language into the target

language. It is a challenge to capture the essence of the original

meaning while maintaining its intended message, tone, and context.

This is why not only language proficiency, but also a deep insight

into the culture is required.

A good interpreter is a mediator, a facilitator of communication,

who enables two or more people from different cultures to interact,

communicate and understand each other without any

misunderstandings, ambiguity, or errors. It is a challenging task

that requires a high level of concentration, attention to details, and

active listening skills, as well as empathy, diplomacy, and

intercultural competence.

Interpreting is both an art and a science. It is about the right

balance between accuracy, completeness, and style. A translation

may be precise and faithful, but it may feel wooden and awkward

in the target language. A good interpreter can transmit the original

meaning and content in a way that sounds natural and smooth in

the target language.

The world of interpreting is not just confined to conference rooms

and diplomatic circles. Interpreters can also be effective in various

other areas such as healthcare, judicial services, entertainment, and

tourism. Each field requires specific skills and knowledge, but the

core values of translation remain the same— integrity, accuracy,

and confidentiality.

In conclusion, translation is a crucial task in our globalized world,

and interpreters play an indispensable role in facilitating cross-cultural communication and promoting mutual understanding. As a

translator and interpreter, I always strive to improve my skills and

knowledge to meet the diverse needs of my clients. By doing so, I

hope to contribute to a more collaborative, diverse and peaceful

world.
