Interpreting

Interpreting is a verbal communication behavior which transforms the information

from one language into another, and a basic communication tool which human rely on

in cross-cultural and cross- national exchanges.

This article includes six parts; they are the past and present of interpretation, the

definition of interpretation, the characteristics of interpretation, the process of the

interpretation, the categorical classification of interpretation, and the qualification

requirements for an interpreter.

1. The Past and Present of Interpretation

Interpreting has a two-thousand-year history in China as a kind of profession. It is

hard to say where interpreting exactly comes from. In the past, there are middleman,

intermediary to help people with different languages communicate. They are usually

immigrants who know two or more languages and also called dragoman, truchman.

These people are not trained professionally. With the development of the

communication, they can not meet the demand. So interpreter with specific skills and

ways of thought is necessary. As other specific profession, interpreter has the

interpreting professional skills. Interpreter becomes an international profession in the

First World War. It is in the Paris Peace Conference interpreters who have been

trained firstly and professionally to meet the requirements of the conference. After

that interpreter has become an important profession in the world.

2. The Definition of Interpretation

Interpreting is verbal communication behavior which transforms the information from

3. The Characteristics of Interpretation

Interpreting is a special communicated activity about language.

First is its extemporaneousness. Interpreting is a bilingual communicated activity

which is unpredictable and impromptu. This need interpreters think fast and express

influential.

Second is its stressfulness. The pressure from the atmosphere will make the

interpreter feel nervous.

Third is its independence. The interpreter should do all the things and be responsible

for the translation by himself.

Fourth is comprehensiveness. The interpreting combines listening, speaking, reading,

writing and other basic expression skills like these.

Last but not least is its miscellaneousness. Interpreting includes different kinds of

information and knowledge, like economy, policy, nature, and so on. So, the

interpreter needs to have a lot of knowledge. For the interpreting should be happened

in an environment.

4. The Process of the Interpretation

The process of the interpretation has four parts: listening, memorizing, processing,

and delivering. Listening is an input and the first important part. So interpreter should

listen and sometimes should see carefully. Interpreter should remember the

information using the top-down memory method and then try their best to translate

what he has heard. After translating, delivering, output, is last part of the interpreting.

Interpreter should speak out loudly, properly and clearly.

5. The Categorical Classification of Interpretation

There are many ways to despite the interpreting.

According to the practicing, it has two kinds: consecutive interpreting or alternating

and simultaneous interpreting.

In simultaneous interpreting, there are three kinds. They are conference simultaneous

interpreting, sight interpreting and whispering interpreting.

6. The Qualification Requirements for an Interpreter

a. Interpreter should love the country and have the Good professional ethics.

b. Interpreter should know and be good at two or more languages.

c. Interpreter should have a influent expression.

d. Interpreter should be brilliant and have a good memory.

e. Interpreter should know different kinds of knowledge, for example, political,

humanity, science, business, laws, history, international, and so on.

f. Interpreter should have a good manner.

Conclusion

Interpreting is an international position, so the requirement of interpreter much high.

To be a good interpreter should work harder and harder for there is so many things to

learn.
