Section A The First Macdonald’s Restaurant

Step 2 Lead in and exploring

Building can be symbols of culture-places where history has occurred. To some

people, history is not important. But when a historic building is about to be destroyed,

people react. In your opinion, what can be the symbols of culture in China?

As we all know, Macdonald’s is the world’s leading fast food service retailer. So far,

it has more than 30,000 restaurant in 119 countries serving 46 million customers each

day. Nowadays, not only Macdonald’s but also some other fast food restaurant are

getting more and more popular. Why is it so? Let’s do a survey among the students:

Question 1: What’s your favorite fast food restaurant?

Question 2: Why do you think many Chinese people like to go to Macdonald’s or

KFC?

6. location n. a place or position 地点位置

e.g. Can you tell me the exact location?你能告诉我确切的位置吗?

locate v. 1) to find the exact position of sb/sth 出确切位置 e.g. I can’t locate the shop.

2) to put, build, etc sth in a particular place 设置/建筑在(某地点),位于

e.g. The railway station is located to the west of the city.

7. inspector n. 检查员,督察员 e.g. Keep you bus ticket. An inspector may ask to see it.

inspect v. 检查,视察,检阅 e.g. All food shop should be inspected regularly. 所有食品店都要定期接受检查。

8. structure n. 1)the way that the parts of sth are put together or organized结构,组织

e.g. the structure of the brain 脑部结构 the political and social structure of a

country 国家的政治及社会结构

9. afford v. 1) to have enough time or money to be able to do sth 有足够的时间,金钱做某事

e.g. In those days we couldn’t afford a television.

2) can’t/couldn’t afford: to not be able to do sth ot let sth happen because it would

have a bad result for you 不能做某事或不容某事发生

e.g. We can’t afford to lose this contract. The future of th company depends on it.

10. amount n. 1) the amount of sth is how much of it there is; quantity 量,数量

e.g. I spent an enormous amount of time preparing for the exam.

2) total or sum of money 金额,总金额

v. amount to sth: to add to; to total 等于,总共达

11. claim v. 1) 声称,宣称,断言 e.g. Colin claims that the book belongs to him.

2) 索求,认领 e.g. The police are keeping the animal until somebody claims it.

12. deny v. denies; denied, denied

1) deny sth/doing sth/that 否认,不承认

e.g. He denied all the charges in court.

2) deny sb sth; deny sth to sb: to refuse to allow sb to have sth 拒绝给予,不准

13. local adj. of a particular place (near you) 本地,当地,地方的 locally adv.

local newspaper/government/time/phone call

14. explanation n. making sth clear or giving a reason for sth [C] 解释,说明理由,阐明

e.g. That idea need some explanation.

explain v. 1) to make sth clear or easy to understand 阐明;说明白,解释

e.g. I don’t understand it. Can you explain?

2) to give a reason to sth 说明原因;解释原因

e.g. The manager explained to the customers why the goods were late.

15. abandon vt. 1) 放弃,终止 e.g. an abandoned car

2) (中途)放弃;半途而废 e.g. The search for the missing sailors was abandoned

after two days. 两天后,搜救船员的工作停止了。

16. peace n. 1) 和平,太平,平静 e.g. a peace treaty 合约

2)the state of being calm or quiet 安静,宁静 e.g. I am tired-can you just leave me

in peace? 我很累,你能不能让我静一静。

Step 4 Skimming

1 Ask students to read the text as quickly as they can and tried to get the main idea of this

passage.

2 Ask students to read the text again , then finish the exercises on P8

Step 5 Intensive reading

1. McDonald’s, though, says the building should be torn down.

Meaning: Macdonald’s, however, says that the building should be pulled down.

tear down 拆除,拆毁 tear tore torn

2. … the building is now in danger of being destroyed, along with their memories.

Meaning: The first McDonald’s restaurant is now facing the possibility of being torn

down. Together with the disappearance of the building, people’s good memories about it

would be ruined, too.

in danger of: 处于…危险中 e.g. The trees in the forests have been cut down in such great

numbers that the forest is in danger of disappearing.

along with 连同…一起; 与…一道

3. Many people in the town of Downey don’t agree with this line of thinking, though.

agree with: have or share the same opinion, feeling or purpose 意见一致,同意

e.g. I don’t agree with experiments on animals.

line of thinking/thought 思路,想法 e.g. I worry about this line of thinking because it is not

good for children.

4. There’s no room for a drive-thru window, or for seating inside.

Meaning: There is no space where people can buy food without getting out of their car. Nor

is there space for people to sit and eat inside.

There’s (no) room for 有(无)…的余地(或需要)

e.g. There is no room for four people on the back seat of the car.

5. Some think that McDonald’s real reason for wanting to close down the restaurant has nothing

to do with money.

close down: (使)停业 e.g. The bank is bound to close down. 这家银行注定要倒闭。

have nothing to do with:have no connection with 与…毫无关系

e.g. Her worry has nothing to do with her job. 她的忧虑和工作没有关系。

6. To local historians, this explanation makes total sense.

make sense: 有道理 e.g. Your conclusions make a good deal of sense to me. 你的结论在我

看来很有道理。

7. …so that the city of Downey will be able to stop McDonald’s from tearing the building down.

stop…from:prevent…from 阻止,制止 e.g. Can’t you stop the car making that noise? 你不能阻止车停止发出那种声音吗?

8. Even so, people drive by to remember their McDonald’s, taking pictures of a moment in

history before it gets taken away.

even so: in spite of what has/had happened 尽管如此 e.g. There are many spelling mistakes;

even so, it’s quite a good essay. 文章中拼写错误不少,尽管如此,它不失为一篇

好文章。

take away: remove sth from a particular place 带走,拿走,拆毁

e.g. A postman will come and take away letters in this mailbox twice a day.
