Luis’s whole family met every June to celebrate Grandpa’s birthday. Before everyone sat down to

eat, each person had to tell a personal story they had about ______. Some family members told the

same story year after year. Luis, for example, had his usual story about the time Grandpa taught him

how to take care of a vegetable garden.

The stories were a ______. And now that most of the grandchildren were old enough to ______, the

tradition could go on for quite a while. Last year, it took three hours. Luis tried hard not to yawn(打哈欠) as he listened to all the same old stories.

This year, Uncle Frank and Aunt Teresa had dinner ready early and called everyone to eat.

“What about the ______?” Luis asked.

“There’s just not enough time this year, with so many people,” Uncle Frank said.

After hearing this, Luis felt relieved(如释重负). But he also felt a little ______ as he sat down at the

long dining table. Without the tradition, Grandpa’s birthday felt like any other holiday the family

shared.

Luis eyed the plate of vegetable salad. “You know, I wouldn’t know how to pick a tomato right if it

wasn’t for Grandpa,” he said softly.

“I wouldn’t know ______ to drive a car,” said Aunt Teresa.

“I wouldn’t know how to turn a paperclip into a safety pin,” added Uncle Felix. “That sure saved the

day at Edna’s wedding(婚礼)!” Everyone laughed and smiled at each other at the reminder of that

Many people love taking photographs. Some are good at taking pictures of people. Others focus

more on sports or nature.

Mr. Luo, a retired railroad worker, took up photography at age 60. He joined a photography club and

became an active member of it. He often went on bike rides and took pictures. This summer he did

something unusual but amazing with his camera.

On that day, Mr. Luo got up at 5:00 am. He went to a pond in the countryside where there were

always plenty of dragonflies. With great excitement, he set up his camera. First, he found a water

bug in the muddy water. He waited until the bug climbed up a lily pad. There, it stopped to rest.

Fifteen minutes later, the bug's body began to change. The skin split behind the head, and the adult

dragonfly crawled out of its old skin. One hour later, the dragonfly started to separate its wings,

which had been wet and folded at the beginning. Then, the dragonfly opened its wings for the first

time. In another hour, the dragonfly moved with its wings and flew off for food.

He took a series of pictures of a dragonfly that was changing from a nymph to an adult. Using his

camera, he recorded (记录) the whole process, which took nearly five hours!

People are amazed at the series of pictures. Whenever people praise (夸赞) him for his work, Mr.

Luo says, "Don't give the credit to me. Give it to nature. I just use my camera to record moment and

show it to the world."

Are you a little shy when it comes to raising your hand in class? If so, that's totally normal. We've

been there. With all attention on you, it can be so scary to speak up.

However, if you can break through your fear, we promise you can benefit

(受益)a lot. According

to a government study, some students are falling behind because they're too shy to put their hands up

when a teacher asks a question. So try to raise your hand!

To start with, you'll realize the power of being wrong. Nobody is right all the time. Your teacher will

be happy to see your participation and won't punish you for being wrong. He or she will explain why

you're wrong. You'll learn something new. Chances are, other students think the same thing as you,

but don't speak up. Not only do you help yourself, but you help your shy classmates, too.

Besides, your teacher will know you're interested in learning. Participating in class shows that you

are not falling asleep behind your textbook. This is beneficial to you and your teacher. Your teacher

will appreciate your interaction (互动) during the lesson and will remember your enthusiasm(热情)The next time you're one point away from an A+.

What's more, you'll have fun discussing with your classmates. When you and other classmates are

raising hands to answer questions, it makes the class more interesting and allows you to actively

engage with the lesson. Your teacher doesn't have to stand in the front of the room talking nonstop

for a long time. Class time will fly by and your mind won't be wandering to the clock every 5

minutes.

Most importantly, you'll know that you've actually learned the material. One of the best ways to

prove that you actually know something is by talking about it. Speaking up in class shows that you

are trying to understand or have understood what you've been taught.

Don't be shy or afraid to raise your hand in class. Nobody is judging you. Seriously. It'll finally pay

off?

37. The writer probably agrees that .

A.being active in class is helpful to your study

B.teachers should help students learn more in class

C.students like discussing better than answering questions

D.speaking up in class means understanding the material well

38. What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To encourage students to speak up in class.

B.To question about the material learned in class.

C.To discuss reasons why students are shy in class.

D.To introduce ways to help students raise hands in class.

BALLET

D.take part in

Ballet is a type of dance. It is a kind of art that can express a feeling, tell a story, or interpret a song.

The first ballet began in the 15th century. Ballet dancers may be men and women—ballet is not just

for girls! They are strong, pretty, and flexible(柔韧的).

Many movements in ballet are unusual for the human body. Dancers turn their legs out, instead of

having their knees and feet straight forward. They also point their feet and may even dance on the

tips of their toes.

Dancers must go through a lot of training. Many take classes almost daily if they’d like to be

professional(职业的) ballet dancers. They need to practice often to keep up their strength. That also

means that dancers need to take very good care of their bodies, so their bodies can keep up with the

dancing! Dancers need to be well rested and eat healthy meals. They also should drink plenty of

water and listen to their bodies by resting if that’s what their bodies need.

In ballet class, most teachers ask dancers to warm up their bodies at first. After that, dancers come to

the center to practice other movements. They should start slowly when learning new steps, so their

bodies have time to get used to the steps and not get injured.

In fact, it is not easy to become good ballet dancers. Not only do dancers need to control their bodies

well, but they need to have a good understanding of music.
