Section 3 Trying Your Hand: Thank-you notes and congratulation cards/

letters

Thank-you notes and congratulation cards / letters are very useful for expressing thanks and

good wishes on some social occasions. It is also important for us to learn how to reply to them

properly.

1) Thank-you notes are usually exchanged between friends and acquaintances, and they are

brief, direct and in an informal style. They are often written in simple language, using

courteous words and sentences to express the writer’s good wish or thanks.

2) People often write and send a congratulation card to congratulate people on such joyful

occasions as celebrating one’s promotion, wedding, birthday, graduation, etc. Congratulation

cards are also exchanged on holidays. The language used in a congratulation card usually

sounds courteous and complimentary.

1. offer: v. make available or accessible, provide or furnish; agree freely; put forward for

consideration; make available for sale; propose a payment提供,提出,出价,贡献,提议,出现,

eg. He offered his seat to me.他把座位让给了我。

He came towards me, smiled and offered his hand.他向我走来,微笑著伸出手来和我握手。

n. the verbal act of offering; something offered (as a proposal or bid);a usually brief

After his speech he invited questions and comments (from the audience). 他讲完话后请听众提出问题和意见。

*词语用法:

可以说invite ,也可以说invite ,但是前者的用法比较普遍;

invite有两层含义:invite sb to加名词,表示“邀请某人参加某项活动”,to后直接加名词,

不属于不定式。invite sb to do sth,表示“邀请某人做某事”,

3. grateful: adj. feeling or showing gratitude; affording comfort or pleasure;感激的;令人愉快的

eg. I can't express how grateful I am. 我说不出我有多么感激。

I am grateful for all your past kindness. 多蒙关照,万分感激。

We are grateful to you for your bounteous gifts.对您给予的丰厚礼物,我们不胜感激。

The trees afford grateful shade. 这些树能为(行人)提供纳凉之所。

4. appreciate: v. recognize with gratitude; be grateful for; be fully aware of; realize fully欣赏,赏识,感激,领会,意识到

eg. Very few people really appreciate his works.没人赏识他的作品。

His talents are not fully appreciated in that company. 他的才干在那家公司未受到充分赏识。

We appreciate your helping us.我们感谢你们的帮助。

*词义辨析: appreciate, enjoy这两个动词均含“欣赏”之意。

appreciate: 多用于文学方面,强调对事物有深入的理解能力,且能鉴赏。

enjoy: 普通用词,使用广泛,程度不及appreciate,多指从外界事物中得到喜悦与满足,领略到乐趣,享受意味强。

*词语用法: appreciate后可接that从句。美国人习惯在appreciate后直接加that,而英国人则习惯在that前加上the fact。

5. recognize: vt. accept (someone) to be what is claimed or accept his power and authority;

express obligation, thanks, or gratitude for; exhibit recognition for (an antigen or a substrate);

show approval or appreciation of;承认;认出;意识到;表示感激

eg. Can you recognize her from this picture? 你能从这张照片中认出她吗?

I recognize that she is the best worker we have. 我认识到她是我们最好的工人。

6. award: n. grant made by a law court; something given for victory or superiority in a contest

or competition or for winning a lottery奖品;奖
