Discourse is the way in which we use language to

communicate in different social contexts. It involves

understanding and using language appropriately in different

situations and with different people.

In an English language classroom, teaching discourse

includes teaching students how to communicate effectively and

appropriately in various real-life situations, such as

conversations, debates, interviews, presentations, and

negotiations. Here are some possible teaching points for

discourse in English oral communication:

1. Register and tone: Teaching students the appropriate

formality or informality in different situations. For example,

using more formal language in a job interview compared to

casual conversation with friends.

2. Turn-taking and interrupting: Helping students

understand the conventions of taking turns in a conversation

and when it is acceptable to interrupt or interject.

3. Politeness strategies: Teaching students how to use

politeness expressions and appropriate language to be polite,

such as using "please", "thank you", and "excuse me".

4. Opening and closing conversations: Teaching students

how to start and end conversations politely and appropriately,

such as using greetings and farewells.

5. Asking and answering questions: Guiding students on

how to ask questions effectively and how to provide clear and

complete answers.

6. Clarification and checking understanding: Teaching

students techniques for seeking clarification when they don't

understand and checking understanding during a conversation.

7. Giving opinions and responding: Helping students

express their opinions clearly and respectfully, as well as

providing appropriate responses to others' opinions.

8. Using appropriate gestures and body language: Teaching

students how non-verbal communication, such as facial

expressions and body language, can enhance their spoken

discourse.

9. Cohesion and coherence: Assisting students in

organizing their thoughts and ideas logically, using

appropriate linking words, and structuring their speech in a

cohesive manner.

10. Cultural awareness: Raising students' awareness of

cultural differences and teaching them how to adapt their

discourse accordingly when interacting with people from

different cultures.

It's important for educators to create opportunities for

students to practice and apply these discourse skills through

role-play activities, discussions, debates, and real-life

simulations. Providing feedback and guidance on improving

their communication skills will also help students become

more confident and effective English speakers.
