Caohai Lake

草海

Caohai Lake, located in the outskirts of WeiningCounty with an elevation of

2 200 meters,is anatural freshwater Lake found on Guizhou Plateau.

草海位于威宁县郊区,海拔200米,是贵州高原的一个天然淡水湖。

Covering a total area of more than 45.5 squarekilometers, this lake is also the largest plateau lakein Guizhou.

面积超过45.5万平方公里,这个湖也是贵州最大的高原湖泊。

According to local historical records, there used to be four lakes in each direction.

据当地历史记录,曾经在每个方向有四个湖泊。

At a later date, these lakes became land.

在一段时间以后,这些湖泊成为土地。

During the reign of Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911),mountain torrentsoccurred and the floods poured into the basin making the basin become a vast lake.

The lake is abundant in various kinds of seaweed, hence the name Caohai Lake (Grass Lake).
