About a mile behind our Minnesota farm lay a pond in a stand of oak trees. In
summer, it would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(浮渣)with an unpleasant smell. We
stayed away.
When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice
covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.” The ice looked solid. No water showed
through it, but I hesitated. “You’re lighter than I am.” Harry urged. “If the ice holds, we can
slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please him, and I thought about the fun of a long
slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond.
However, In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack! The next
thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the icy water. I thought of the bottom of
the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting
creatures.
I tried to climb out, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like glass. Again and
again, I tried. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. As my coat became
completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms
stretched out on the ice.
I looked at Harry on shore, who seemed rooted to the spot. “I can’t get out!” I
screamed when I caught some breath. Seeing him turned and ran from the pond, despair and
scare beat me out of breath. After what seemed to be centuries of fruitless waiting, I was on the
verge of breaking down.
Just at that moment, here dashed Harry with a large V-shaped oak branch.
The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over.
参考范文:
Just at that moment, here dashed Harry with a large V-shaped oak branch. Flopping to his
stomach(扑倒在地), he pushed the branch before him and wriggled(蠕动) toward me. The
moment a slim top branch was within reach, I grabbed it immediately. “Keep flat on your
stomach(展平趴好)!” He shouted and I did as told. Inch by inch, I was dragged out of the icy
water by Harry. What a narrow escape! The next 20 minutes witnessed us stumbling( 跌 跌 撞
撞 ) our way home, with my clothes dripping (滴着水) and my shoes squishing(发出吧唧声) .
The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. Having
unbuttoned(解 开纽扣) my coat, she gave me a quick bath and then wrapped a thick blanket
over me to stop my teeth-chattering chill(牙齿打颤的冷); meanwhile I was served a cup of hot
chocolate to warm up. I tearfully(泪眼婆娑地) complained about what had happened, and Harry
was scolded for getting his younger brother into such danger. His head drooping(低垂着), Harry
murmured(嘟囔着) an apology to me. When winter came the next year, the pond looked all
inviting again, but we learned our lesson and stayed away this time.
