How to Solve the Problem of Environmental Protection

The problem of environmental protection has drawn attention and concern

of people all over the world, for people have realized that humans are

a part of nature and should be responsible for the ecological balance.

The world population is growing so rapidly that our earth seems too crowded.

Vast stretches of fertile lands are being turned into deserts. The

reduction of wooded areas has resulted in increased flooding and water

shortages in dry seasons.

There are two basic sources of the problems. One is manmade. For instance,

people cut down trees either for sale or for fuel. The coverage of the

world’s forests is rapidly diminishing, which is attributed to the

denudation and forest fires. Another destructive factor is war. During

the wars in Iraq and Yugoslavia, many chemical weapons were used.

Consequently, the natural environment is seriously damaged. The other is

natural catastrophes, such as forest fires，floods, and volcanoes.

So, governments of all countries should establish strict laws to prevent

the environment from being further polluted. Measures should be taken to

make people realize the urgency of protecting our earth. Besides, more

greenbelts should be built every year, and forests should be well

protected. Everyone should try his best to make our earth a better place

to survive.

Economic Development and Environmental Protection

Some people think that the urgent task in our country is to develop economy on a large scale.

Many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. Many children cannot afford to

receive the compulsory education. They believe that the only way to get rid of poverty is to

develop economy, which is bound to bring prosperity.

On the other hand, many people insist that environmental protection should be a top priority.

Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosion, waste gases poison the air we

are breathing, and rivers, lakes, and even seas are polluted by waste dumped in them from

factories and cities. Evidently, the deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the

existence of mankind. What has brought the pollution is the rapid and advanced development of

economy.

In my opinion, both economic development and environmental protection are our urgent tasks

now. Without economic development, we would remain backward, and we might be conquered

and bullied by other countries. Without environmental protection, we would lose our home.

Therefore, the best solution is that we should devote to the protection of our home while we are

developing our economy. There is plenty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be

achieved by balancing economic growth with protection of the environment. Many findings in

scientific research can be applied in the environmental protection. Both the government and

ordinary people should join hands to make this world a better place to live in, not only for

ourselves, but also for future generations.
