Imagine finding a job where you can put together everything important to you. I’ve managed to have a career that does

just that. My name is Ronald Green and I’m a fashion designer.

My training as a creative person began when I was a little boy. I was born and spent my early childhood in Lax

Kw’alaams. It was from my mother that I inherited(经遗传获得) the love for and the connection to the history and traditions

of my people. My earliest works are reflective of many traditional symbols and as I acquired new skills, I translated these

into fashion designs.

I’ve always been interested in the use of images and natural items in the making of ceremonial clothing. At the

University of Victoria, I studied many techniques traditional to my culture. I created work with images of my childhood,

using shell buttons and Melton wool. I also experimented with other techniques that are modern and not usual to my

traditional roots. Finally, I developed my own style for these images. I’m proud to say many of my works decorate galleries

and holiday spots in my country.

I find inspiration in the natural world — a swimming whale, a singing bird etc. I also get new ideas from respectable

artists who have created their own interpretation of their First Nations culture such as Bill Reid and Norval Morrisseau.

When I create my designs, the greatest inspiration comes from the person who commissions(委托) the piece. I want all

the elements(要素) of the person who will wear my clothes to come together in the piece. Who is that person? What images

can reflect his personality? All these forces come together to assist me in the design of the perfect piece.

4. How does the author develop his design style?

A. By learning from his mother.

B. By creating ceremonial clothes.

C. By appreciating works in various galleries.

D. By combining convention and modernness.

5. Why does the author mention Bill Reid and Norval Morrisseau?

A. To express his respect for them.

B. To introduce First Nations culture.

D. To show a way for him to get inspired.

C. To explain their understanding of art.

6. Which contributes most to the author’s having exciting new ideas?

A. His client.

B. His culture.

D. Traditional symbols. C. Natural objects.

7. What is the text?

A. A self-assessment.

C. A self-statement.

C

B. A public appeal.

D. A career review.

Over the past decades, experts have done a considerable amount of research to explore different ways to encourage

children’s learning. Especially, there has been a common focus on how physical activity, separated from the learning

activities, can improve children’s learning. However, there has been less of a focus aimed at the potential of integrating(合并) physical activity into the learning activities.

The main purpose of the Basketball Mathematics study conducted at five Danish primary and elementary schools by

researchers from the University of Copenhagen therefore was to develop a learning activity that integrates basketball and

mathematics and examine how it might affect children’s motivation for mathematics.

756 children from 40 different classes at Copenhagen area schools participated in the project, whereabout half of them

— once a week for six weeks — had Basketball Mathematics during gym class, while the other half played basketball

without mathematics.

“During classes with Basketball Mathematics, the children had to collect numbers and perform calculations associated

with various basketball exercises. An example could be counting how many times they could sink a basket from three meters

away vs at a one-meter distance, and adding up the numbers. Both the math and basketball elements(要素) could be adjusted

to suit the children’s levels, as well as being adjusted for whether it was addition, multiplication or some other operations

that needed to be practiced,” explains Linn Damsgaard, a leading researcher.

The results showed that children’s motivation for math integrated with basketball was 16% higher compared to

classroom math learning. Children also experienced a 14% increase in self-determination compared with classroom teaching.

Meanwhile Basketball Mathematics improved their math confidence.

“We are planning to do research to examine whether the Basketball Mathematics model can strengthen performance in

mathematics. Once we have the final results, we hope that they will inspire school teachers and principals to prioritize(优先处理) more physical activity and movement in such subjects. Eventually, we hope to succeed in putting these tools into

school system and teacher education,” says Associate Professor Jacob Wienecke.

8. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

A. To show the advantage of the study.

B. To explain the reason for the study.

D. To introduce a way to raise math grades. C. To conduct a review of past research.

9. What can we learn about the study?

A. All kids didn’t play basketball.

B. Kids were divided into 40 groups.

D. It tailored activities to different kids. C. It studied kids’ math performance.

10. What effect does basketball have on the participants?

A. More motivation for exercise.

C. A gain in desire to learn math.

B. More confidence in basketball.

D. A rise in determination to learn.

11. How does Jacob Wienecke expect the study to help educators?

A. Make math learning easier.

D

There is a trend in New York right now where people are carrying cotton bags for doing the shopping. But new data

B. Inspire students’ math confidence.

D. Notice the benefits of physical exercise. C. Build physical activity into teaching.

challenge the common view that cotton bags are better than plastic ones and are planet-friendly.

According to the data, an organic cotton bag needs to be used 20,000 times to cancel out its overall impact of production.

That equals daily use for 54 years — for just one bag. Dealing with a bag in an environmentally low-impact way is not

nearly as simple as people think.

You can’t, for example, just put a cotton bag in a garbage can. Even when a cotton bag does make it toa treatment plant,

most dyes(染料) used to print logos onto it are PVC-based and extremely difficult to breakdown chemically; thus it can’t be

processed to be used again. Christopher Stanev, the co-founder of Evrnu, a Seattle-based recycling firm, estimates 10 to 15

percent of the cotton they receive is wasted this way.

That’s not to say cotton is worse than plastic, or that the two should even be compared. While growing cotton can use

pesticides(杀虫剂) and make rivers dry up due to water consumption, producing lightweight plastic bags uses greenhouse

fossil(化石) fuels which cannot be changed naturally by bacteria into substances that do not harm the environment, and the

bags will pile up in the ocean.

Aesop, an Australian brand, is changing the composition of its shopping bags to a 60﹣40 combination of recycled and

organic cotton. It will cost more, but reduce water by 70 to 80 percent. Some brands are turning to other alternatives —

designer Anya Hindmarch introduced a new version of her original bag made from recycled water bottles. But in the end,

the simplest solution may be the most obvious. Not every product needs a bag.

12. What is the common people’s attitude to using cotton bags?

A. Objective. B. Uncaring. C. Favorable. D. Opposed.

13. What do the figures in paragraph 2 indicate?

A. Cotton bags are hard to recycle.

B. Cotton bags are strong and long-lasting.

C. Processing cotton bags is time-consuming.

D. Cotton bags may do more harm than good.

14. Why are some cotton bags wasted in treatment plants?

A. Printed patterns make them unrecyclable.

C. There are too many cotton bags to process.

15. What does the author advise shoppers to do?

A. Buy fewer products.

C. Seek new alternatives.

B. Reduce the use of bags.

D. Turn to recycled cotton bags.

B. Logos can’t be removed from them.

D. Most dyes damage the environment.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Coffee cups, clothes all over the floor and uninvited guests — and they’re not even yours! These are the joys of

flatsharing. For many, buying a house or flat is just too expensive. In fact, the total amount of rent paid by tenants(租户) in

Britain in 2017 rose to more than £50 billion — more than double the level of ten years ago. 16 You rent a room and

share the kitchen, living room and bathroom, for example. But apart from the financial saving, what are the advantages and

disadvantages of flatsharing?

Living with others means that you can pool your resources. 17 Living with people means meeting their friends,

who may then become your friends. And don’t forget the networking opportunity. Lastly, there’s the emotional support.

18 But don’t forget to return a favor when they need it.

But flatsharing means there’s limited storage space. Some people may not respect the boundaries. You might well come

home to find your things in a mess. 19 Despite the list showing turns of duty, some people don’t like to pull their

weight. And then there are unexpected events. If a flatmate forgets to inform you about a party they’re throwing and what

you want is a quiet night, it can be challenging.

20 Some people prefer their own space, while others enjoy a social environment. For many who lack the means

to buy their own property, a flat share is, and will continue to be, a necessity regardless.

A. You can gain access to their social networks.

B. There’ll always be a shoulder to cry on when you need one.

C. The most obvious disadvantage is that you may not get much privacy.

D. Besides, cleanliness may be one of the biggest disadvantages of a shared flat.

E. Despite the disadvantages, there are many advantages involved in flatsharing.

F. Those with a tight budget may choose to share the place with others to save money.

G. Whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages is something decided by yourself.
