Proceeds

Proceeds, in the broadest sense, refers to a revenue stream or financial

concept that includes money collected from the sale of goods or services, the

liquidation of investments, and other sources. Proceeds are the money

remaining after an initial expenditure such as the purchase of something has

been made.

Proceeds can be categorised into two distinct groups: primary and secondary.

Primary proceeds refer to payments made to a vendor for goods purchased,

such as a new car or house. Secondary proceeds are income generated as a

result of an initial outlay, such as money earned from investments or

monetised intellectual property.

An example of primary proceeds would be the sale of a car from a

dealership, with the proceeds from the sale being the money remaining after

the purchase price. An example of a secondary proceed would be the amount

of money gained from the sale of stocks or shares. All of the dividends,

capital gains, and any other forms of income obtained can be included in

secondary proceeds.

In the business and finance world, proceeds can also refer to money received

from the liquidation of investments. When the holders of an investment such

as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds decide to liquidate all or part of the

investment, proceeds are whatever amount of money is left after the

expenses of the sale have been deducted, such as transaction fees.

In the legal world, proceeds also refer to a concept known as “dirty money”,

which is money that has been acquired via illegal or unethical means. This

dirty money is then laundered through various legal and financial

transactions in order to make it appear to be legitimate earnings.

In conclusion, proceeds refer to a wide array of revenue streams and

financial concepts and can mean different things depending on the context.

They can refer to the money received from the sale of goods or services, the

revenue generated from investments or monetised intellectual property, the

money gained from the liquidation of investments, or even dirty money

acquired via illegal and unethical means.
