Discipline(纪律)

Some people say that the best way to raise children is to them to be independent thinkers. Other

people disagree and say that children need to be taught discipline in order to let them successful.

In other word, children should either be granted(假定) freedom, or be given more discipline. I

tend to agree with a policy of firm(稳固的) discipline.

The people whose view places emphasis(重点) on encouraging children to think freely hope the

child will be able to understand and govern(管理) the world. The child is considered as an “equal”

to the adult. This view has been popular in the western countries, where corporal(身体的)

punishment of children is now illegal. The concept(观念) of “rights” for children is part of a wider

political(政治上的) movement that also asserts(声称) right for women, animals and environment.

The pro-discipline view is based on the commonsensical(常识) observation(观察) that, if left

unchecked(没有管束的),children behave stupidly and even run amok(杀人狂地, 狂乱的).

Disciplinarians(严格的人) believe that physical(肉体的) constrains(强迫) and punishments

imposed(强加于) by adult teach the child that his selfishness, laziness and running wild will lead

him to a bad life. The child then gains wisdom(明智) through lessons. Constraints(约束) and

punishments range from a simple withdrawing(离开) of a “ privilege(特权)” such as pocket

money, limited time for watching TV, to a remark(谈论) of “beating”. Yet the discipline does not

have to be harsh(粗糙的). Sanctions(打破国际制裁的个人) are only applied(实用的) if the child

behaves stupidly.

Discipline has many areas of practical(实践的), one of the most important of which is education.

The Chinese proverb says, “ the strict teacher can cultivate(培养) an outstanding(杰出的)

student.” Some adults have observed(注意到) that strict schools often achieve good academic(大学生, 大学的) accomplishment(成就). Likewise(同样地), people reckon(计算) that disciplined

children are likely to become productive persons.

It is obvious to me that an uncontrolled ch

Competition

Competition is a common phenomenon(现象) in our social life. We compete when we play games

and when we try to do better than others in our study. There is constant(不变的) competition for

academic(大学的) degrees, jobs, customers, money and so forth. In a sense(感觉), competition is

one of the motive(推动的) force to the development of society.

In the natural world, the weak will be replaced by the strong and the fittest can live; therefore, the

only way to survive(活下来) is to be competitive. Growing in a competitive environment is

important for a child because future adult life is difficult. Finding a good job, for example, is an

extremely competitive activity. Today, most people obtain knowledge through various ways and a

large number of people get good education. There are also many people who have higher degrees

in their special fields. The quality of people is rapidly increasing. Competition is more violent(激烈的) that what we thought it should be. The potentially(潜在地) successful job applicant(申请人)

has to be prepared in a stronger position by gaining more qualification(资格) and experience. In

the sports contests(竞争), the strongest will come out as winners. They become our heroes and

they are glorified(赞美). In the business world, to beat your competitors, you must be better than

the other employees. Otherwise you will be defeated(击败).

In fact, the only way our world reward(报答) people is to give laurels(殊荣) to the winners, not to

the losers(失败者). What is more, by attempting to compete at different activities, we learn to win

and lose, gain experience and know our strengths(实力) and weaknesses. Competition prepares us

for the tough(坚韧的) things in life.

To go ahead, to acquire possession(所有物), we should be competitive. To us, industriousness(勤奋) and ambition(抱负) are positive(确实的) values.

Whether in games, in study or in business alike, the aim is to win the game, the degree, the

trophy(战利品), and the contract(合同). Learning to be competitive is cl

Write an essay of 160—200 words based on the following pie charts. In your essay, you should

first describe the pie charts, then interpret its meaning, and give your comment on it.

You should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

As is apparently revealed in the pie charts above, forty-eight percent of people surveyed have

never heard of the International No Motor Vehicle Day while fifty-seven percent are willing to

give up driving on such a day. What is betrayed in the pie charts is most thought-provoking.

The implied meaning of the pie charts is both disappointing and exciting. On the one hand,

much necessary work still needs to be done with respect to environmental protection. The public

ignorance of relevant environmental protection results from inadequate and limited popularity of

environmental protection knowledge by relevant government departments at different levels. Since

environmental protection is an international issue, we must constantly introduce the advanced and

practical practice in other countries to our general public. Only in this way can we promote

environmental protection in China. On the other hand, the enhancement of the public awareness of

environmental protection is a welcome development. Over the past years, as people’s living

standard improves, people attach more importance to the quality of their life. They have a better

understanding of the relationship between environment and their daily life. As a result, they are

more interested in following positive international models. In sum, we have got a mixed feeling

toward the very fact revealed in the pie charts.

In my view, necessary measures should be immediately taken to ensure a nice environment.

First of all, government departments at all levels must play a more active role in popularizing

international experience and practice of environmental protection. What’s more, the general

public should be encouraged to participate more actively in environm

Study the picture above carefully and write an essay entitled “On the Interpersonal

Relationship in the Modern World” In the essay, you should (1) descr ibe the picture (2) interpret

its meaning (3) give your opinion about the phenomenon .You should write about 200 words

neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (20 points)

The picture is talking about a story about neighborhood. Two ladies living in the opposite

apartments say “hello” when they happen to meet each other in the corridor. One of them says, “I

moved here 5 years ago, but I never met you before. Could I ask your name please?” The other

says,” I have been here for 6 years. How should I call you?”

It seems very ridiculous that people living so near don’t know each other for such a long

time. However, this kind of story is performed everywhere. It is the exact reflection of

interpersonal relationships in the modern world. In the modern world, most people live in

apartments. They close their doors and never go out as soon as they get home from work. If they

live alone, they will kill their time by watching TV or reading magazines. They don’t have any

connections even with their closest neighbors, who seem no different from people they meet

everyday in the street. They become more and more indifferent.

This phenomenon is no good to us, nor to our society. People will feel lonely more and more.

The world becomes so indifferent. Interpersonal relationships are not harmonious. It’s time that

we took some measures to improve it. People living in the same zone can be organized to have

some activities together. We should call on people to be friendly to each other. As a popular song

says,” If everybody gives a little love to each other, the world will become the sea of love.”
